The sea procession and flower festival of Sant'Alessio Siculo, on the Ionian Riviera of Messina
The Patronal Feast of the Madonna del Carmelo is the most cherished event in Sant'Alessio Siculo, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily, nestled on the Ionian Riviera at the foot of the Capo Sant'Alessio promontory. Maria Santissima del Carmelo is the town's patron saint, and her feast, which falls around July 16th, has for generations intertwined religious faith with the community's seafaring life.
The festivities begin with a novena period dedicated to the Virgin, celebrated in the 17th-century church of the Madonna del Carmelo. The most evocative moment arrives on July 16th, the liturgical day of the Carmelo: after a solemn Eucharistic celebration, the statue of the Madonna is loaded onto a boat and led in a sea procession along the entire coastline of Sant'Alessio. The aquatic parade is followed by numerous fishing and tourist boats, creating a scene that blends quiet reflection with popular celebration along the Ionian coast.
To allow for the summer return of many emigrants originally from the town, the festivities conclude on the last Sunday of July with a land procession of the statue through the city streets. The roads are adorned with the traditional infiorata, carpets of petals created by willing citizens and local artists, while the parade is accompanied by a marching band and enlivened by parish groups and associations. For the occasion, the Municipality implements traffic restrictions on the main streets, returning them to the faithful and visitors.
Sant'Alessio Siculo owes its charm to the Norman castle perched on Capo Sant'Alessio—which the Greeks called "Silver Cape"—and to a history that weaves together Roman presence and the passage of Charles V in 1535. The feast of the Madonna del Carmelo is today one of the best opportunities to discover the village: beyond the religious celebrations, the summer offers the beach, seafood cuisine, and traditional Sicilian sweets. A free event open to residents and tourists, it is a symbol of the seafaring identity of this town in Messina.
For 2026, the Patronal Feast of the Madonna del Carmelo in Sant'Alessio Siculo follows the traditional calendar: a preparatory novena, the sea procession on July 16th with the statue embarked and escorted by boats, and the land procession with infiorata on the last Sunday of July, accompanied by the marching band and parish associations. The official program with mass and parade times will be published by the parish closer to the event.
By car: A18 Messina-Catania motorway, exit at Roccalumera or Taormina, then take the SS114 along the Ionian coast. By train: Sant'Alessio Siculo-Forza d'Agrò station on the Messina-Catania-Syracuse line. Nearest airports: Catania-Fontanarossa (approx. 60 km) and Reggio Calabria.
The festivities take place in the second half of July, with the sea procession on July 16th and the procession with the infiorata on the last Sunday of the month. Admission is free for all events.
For the sea procession, it is advisable to arrive early on the seafront to secure a good viewing spot. In high season, it is recommended to book accommodation in advance, choosing between Sant'Alessio, Forza d'Agrò, and nearby Taormina.
