About Sea Festival

On the seafront of Furci Siculo, a small seaside village on the Ionian Riviera in the province of Messina, the Sea Festival celebrates the traditions of fishing and the flavors of the sea every summer. Organized by the Pro Loco and recognized by the UNPLI as a 'Quality Festival' (the only one in Sicily), the event combines famous fresh fried fish, landed every morning by local fishermen, with live music, games, and re-enactments of local folklore. An evening of celebration that smells of the sea and tradition.

The Sea Festival of Furci Siculo

The Sea Festival is the most anticipated fish festival in Furci Siculo, a seaside village nestled along the Ionian Riviera, on the stretch of coast that connects Messina to Taormina, in the province of Messina. Every summer, the event brings the seafront and the municipal park to life, transforming the coastal center into a large open-air gathering dedicated to the sea, fishing, and good seafood cuisine.

A 'Quality Festival' recognized by the UNPLI

Organized by the Pro Loco of Furci Siculo, the Sea Festival received the prestigious 'Quality Festival' recognition in 2020 from the National Union of Pro Loco of Italy (UNPLI): a label awarded to events that promote typical products historically linked to the territory and that tell its history and traditions. At the time, it was the only Sicilian festival included in this exclusive national list, a distinction of which the village is rightly proud.

Fresh fried fish and the flavors of the sea

The heart of the festival is naturally the gastronomy. At the food stalls, you can enjoy fresh fried fish, brought to the port every morning by local fishermen: tuna, swordfish, squid, and shellfish cooked according to Sicilian maritime tradition. The long queues in front of the fryers have become a true institution of the evening over the years.

Music, games, and local folklore

  • Live music performances, with singers and bands enlivening the seafront
  • Games and events that evoke ancient fishing traditions
  • Performances by local folk groups, such as the Canterini della Riviera Jonica 'Melino Romolo', who stage evocative re-enactments of fishermen's lives
  • The Sea Museum, which houses tools and memories of the local maritime culture

The Sea Festival is much more than a gastronomic event: it is a collective tribute to the deep bond between Furci Siculo and its sea, an opportunity to rediscover the maritime identity of a small town in Ionian Sicily that has made fishing and hospitality its hallmarks.
