The festival for emigrants that brings Limina back home on August 16th
In the heart of the Agrò Valley, perched on the Peloritani Mountains, the small town of Limina (Metropolitan City of Messina) preserves one of the most intense and evocative devotions in north-eastern Sicily: the cult of San Filippo d'Agira, the town's patron, popularly known as the "Black Saint" due to the iconography depicting him with a dark face. Filippo was a priest who arrived in Sicily from Syria to evangelize the island: a story of migration and integration that the people of Limina feel deeply connected to.
Limina venerates its saint on several occasions throughout the year: May 11th and 12th, the third Sunday of May (the so-called Octave), and finally August 16th. This last date does not belong to the ancient calendar: it was established in 1964 specifically to welcome the Liminese emigrants who return to the village every summer. It has become the festival of return, of the embrace between those who left and those who stayed, and today it concludes a true Ferragosto triduum made of religious celebrations, community moments, and reunions.
The procession on August 16th replicates the style of the one on May 12th. In the morning, the statue of the Black Saint is carried in procession through the streets of the town; in the afternoon, the "descent" towards the Calvario and Durbi districts begins, with a tribute to the Holy Cross. Here, the faithful witness the most spectacular rites: the ballata of the bearers, who carry the statue on their shoulders, and the traditional running laps, clockwise and counter-clockwise, interpreted by some as the saint's blessing to the faithful and the surrounding fields, and by others as an ancient rite of protection. The streets fill with nzareddi, the characteristic colorful paper ribbons. The day ends late in the evening, when the saint returns to his church and the sky lights up with a fireworks display.
Linked to the Liminese cult is the evocative journey towards the Murazzo pass, about six kilometers from the center, along which tradition says the saint passed during his journey to the city of Agira. The very name "Murazzo", according to some interpretations, refers to the "Moor", or the dark face with which the saint is depicted.
Beyond the procession, the August festival is also a civic and cultural occasion for the entire community: for years, the Liminese Ferragosto has hosted the Emigration Day, a moment of reflection on the return of emigrants and the unbroken bond between Limina and its children scattered throughout Italy and abroad. For those visiting the Province of Messina in summer, the festival of San Filippo d'Agira is an authentic opportunity to discover the deep soul of a village in the Peloritani mountains.
The 2026 edition of the San Filippo d'Agira August festival is scheduled for Sunday, August 16, 2026, in Limina (ME), following the tradition established in 1964 for emigrants returning to the village during the summer.
The Municipality of Limina has announced that it will soon publish the official 2026 program: as every year, the morning procession of the Black Saint's statue through the town streets, the afternoon descent towards the Calvario and Durbi districts with the bearers' dance and running laps, and the evening fireworks display upon the saint's return to the church are expected. Precise times and details will be communicated by the organizers closer to the event.
