The patronal feast of Giardini-Naxos featuring historical re-enactments and a sea procession
The Saint Pancras Festival is the patronal feast of Giardini-Naxos, located in the province of Messina on Sicily's Ionian coast. According to tradition, Saint Pancras arrived from Antioch, Syria, in 42 AD and landed on the beach of ancient Naxos—the island's oldest Greek colony—to spread the Christian message. Legend has it that by planting a cross before a pagan temple, the Saint caused it to collapse into the sea along with the statue of the deity worshipped there. This foundational act forged the deep bond between this seaside town and its patron saint.
The celebration takes place every year on August 9th and 10th, weaving together religious devotion, historical re-enactment, and maritime culture. It is one of the most cherished identity-defining moments for the Giardini-Naxos community, drawing both locals and numerous tourists to the heart of the Ionian Riviera in summer.
The most evocative moment is the sea procession, during which the statue of the Saint is carried by boat along the coast, accompanied by the fishing vessels of the three districts of Saja, Pietragoliti, and Schisò. These festively decorated boats join the aquatic parade in a collective ritual that unites the town's maritime community. The day concludes with the Sea Festival at the Saja harbor, featuring music and performances.
The Saint Pancras Festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is the living memory of a community that identifies with the sea, fishing, and its own millennia-old history, from the Greek origins of Naxos to contemporary maritime traditions. Experienced intensely by the entire town, it remains one of the most characteristic events of the summer in the province of Messina and throughout Sicily.
The 2026 Saint Pancras Festival will be held on August 9th and 10th in Giardini-Naxos (ME). The dates are confirmed according to the annual patronal recurrence.
The first day is dedicated to the historical re-enactment of Saint Pancras' landing on the Lungomare Tysandros beach, the flag-waver parade, the Sciabica with fishermen in period costumes, and fireworks over the sea. The second day culminates in the sea procession, featuring the boats of the three fishing districts of Saja, Pietragoliti, and Schisò, followed by the Sea Festival at the Saja harbor.
The detailed schedule and appointments for the 2026 edition will be published by the Municipality of Giardini-Naxos and the Saint Pancras Parish closer to the festival.
