About Saint Pancras Festival

Every year on August 9th and 10th, Giardini-Naxos honors its patron saint, Saint Pancras, who is considered the first Bishop of Sicily, having landed on the shores of ancient Naxos in 42 AD. The festival blends faith with maritime tradition: a historical re-enactment of the Saint's arrival on the Lungomare Tysandros, flag-waver parades, the evocative 'Sciabica' fishing demonstration with fishermen in period costume, and a solemn sea procession featuring boats from the three fishing districts of Saja, Pietragoliti, and Schisò. It is a defining celebration that lights up the summer on the Ionian coast of Messina.

Saint Pancras, the first Bishop of Sicily

The Saint Pancras Festival is the patronal feast of Giardini-Naxos, located in the province of Messina on Sicily's Ionian coast. According to tradition, Saint Pancras arrived from Antioch, Syria, in 42 AD and landed on the beach of ancient Naxos—the island's oldest Greek colony—to spread the Christian message. Legend has it that by planting a cross before a pagan temple, the Saint caused it to collapse into the sea along with the statue of the deity worshipped there. This foundational act forged the deep bond between this seaside town and its patron saint.

A festival between sea and tradition

The celebration takes place every year on August 9th and 10th, weaving together religious devotion, historical re-enactment, and maritime culture. It is one of the most cherished identity-defining moments for the Giardini-Naxos community, drawing both locals and numerous tourists to the heart of the Ionian Riviera in summer.

August 9th: The landing and the Sciabica

  • The historical re-enactment of Saint Pancras' landing on the Lungomare Tysandros beach, retracing the Saint's arrival in ancient Naxos.
  • The flag-waver parade, bringing the promenade to life with their spectacular displays.
  • The Sciabica, a traditional shore-fishing method performed by fishermen in period costumes, evoking the town's origins.
  • A fireworks display over the sea to conclude the evening.

August 10th: The sea procession

The most evocative moment is the sea procession, during which the statue of the Saint is carried by boat along the coast, accompanied by the fishing vessels of the three districts of Saja, Pietragoliti, and Schisò. These festively decorated boats join the aquatic parade in a collective ritual that unites the town's maritime community. The day concludes with the Sea Festival at the Saja harbor, featuring music and performances.

A heritage of Giardini-Naxos

The Saint Pancras Festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is the living memory of a community that identifies with the sea, fishing, and its own millennia-old history, from the Greek origins of Naxos to contemporary maritime traditions. Experienced intensely by the entire town, it remains one of the most characteristic events of the summer in the province of Messina and throughout Sicily.
