The local feast of the small community of Cané, on the Piné Plateau
The San Giovanni Nepomuceno Festival is one of the small traditional celebrations that mark the year on the Piné Plateau, in the heart of Trentino. It takes place in Cané, one of the historic cores of the Faida hamlet, which belongs to the Municipality of Baselga di Pinè, in the Province of Trento. Faida sits at an altitude of about 972 meters on the western slopes of Mount Calvo and Mount La Brada, consisting of the settlements of Faida, Rauta, Cané, and the ancient farmstead of Prada: a landscape of meadows, woods, and small villages overlooking the plateau of lakes.
The heart of the celebration is the small church dedicated to Saint John Nepomucene, the chapel located in the historic center of the village. Saint John Nepomucene, a 14th-century Bohemian priest venerated as a martyr, is a beloved figure in the religious tradition of the Alpine and Central European regions, often serving as the patron saint of bridges, waters, and good reputation. The chapel, which has undergone restoration and care by the community in recent years, is the place where the inhabitants of Cané and Faida gather every year to renew their devotion.
The festival has a simple and intimate character, typical of mountain patronal feasts. The central moment is the evening Holy Mass, celebrated in the small church of Cané. Following the religious service, as tradition dictates, there is a convivial moment with refreshments in the historic center of the village: an opportunity for neighbors to meet, share a few words, and extend the celebration in the light of the alpine evening.
Organized by the community of Faida di Piné, the festival is a well-established annual appointment: "as per tradition, again this year" the festivity is celebrated, a sign of a bond passed down from year to year. It is not a major tourist event, but that is precisely where its value lies: it is the authentic celebration of a small town, where religious and community dimensions intertwine naturally.
Baselga di Pinè is the main hub of the Piné Plateau, a mountain area a few kilometers from Trento known for its lakes, woods, and small villages. The municipality is part of the Alta Valsugana e Bersntol Community. For those visiting the plateau, participating in the San Giovanni Nepomuceno Festival in Cané means coming into contact with its most genuine soul, that of small mountain communities and their devotions.
On Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 6:00 PM, the small church of San Giovanni Nepomuceno in Cané hosted the evening Holy Mass for the festival, celebrated by Father Stefano Volani. As every year, the community of Faida gathered to renew their devotion to the saint, with the characteristic candle-lighting and the participation of the faithful.
At the end of the celebration, the traditional convivial moment with refreshments took place in the historic center of Cané, an opportunity for the inhabitants of the Piné Plateau to meet.
