Saint Nicholas and the Krampus in the Mòcheni Valley
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
On the evening of December 6th, the town square of Fierozzo (in the Autonomous Province of Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige) becomes the heart of one of the most evocative winter traditions in the Alps: Nikolaus Ont de Taivln, or Saint Nicholas with the devils, the famous Krampus. Rooted in the culture of the German-speaking linguistic minority of the Mòcheni Valley (Bersntol), the festival attracts families and curious visitors every year, not only from the valley itself but also from Pergine Valsugana and Trento.
The most anticipated moment is the arrival of Saint Nicholas, with his thick white beard and bishop's robes, accompanied by an angel and, according to local tradition, the figure of Saint Lucy. The Saint descends into the village and speaks to the children, asking if they have been good throughout the year and if they have recited their prayers. Each child receives a bag filled with sweets and fruit, brought by a small cart.
By his side parade the Krampus, the unsettling figures with wooden masks, horns, and cowbells representing devils. With their thunderous approach, they playfully frighten both adults and children, creating a dramatic contrast between the goodness embodied by the Saint and the dark forces of winter.
To accompany the wait for the parade, the Pro Loco of Fierozzo sets up a small stall in the square serving hot drinks and panettone to warm up attendees on cold December nights. The gathering continues throughout the evening in a festive atmosphere that blends religious devotion, folklore, and community life.
Nikolaus Ont de Taivln is much more than just a folkloric event: it is a way for the Fierozzo community to preserve and pass on the cultural identity of the Mòcheni Valley, where the ancient Mòcheni language is still spoken. The event is part of the wider calendar of Saint Nicholas and Krampus celebrations that bring numerous towns across Trentino-Alto Adige to life during the first week of December.
The dates for the 2026 edition of Nikolaus Ont de Taivln have not yet been announced. As it is a well-established annual tradition, it is likely that the Saint Nicholas festival with the Krampus will take place in early December, in line with the December 6th recurrence. The program with times and details will be published by the Pro Loco of Fierozzo closer to the event.
The festival is traditionally held on the evening of December 6th. The 2025 edition took place on December 6th at 8:00 PM.
