The districts of San Marzano sul Sarno compete for the patron saint's mitre

The San Biagio Patronal Festival is the defining event for San Marzano sul Sarno, a town in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area of the province of Salerno, in Campania. During the celebrations, a document from 601 AD, known as the Sancte Biase act, is publicly commemorated; it marks the moment the local community was entrusted to the bishop and martyr of Sebaste—a bond spanning over fourteen centuries that still shapes the town's civil and religious calendar today.
San Biagio, who lived between the 3rd and 4th centuries in Armenia, was a scholar and physician before becoming a bishop, and is traditionally invoked as the protector of the throat. His liturgical feast falls on February 3rd, when the municipality organizes a day of celebrations in Piazza Umberto I with free entry. However, it is in September that San Marzano sul Sarno truly comes alive, featuring an extensive civil program and the patron saint's procession along the town's main streets.
The most anticipated moment is the procession on the second Sunday of September: the statue of San Biagio travels through the main streets, accompanied by the faithful, the clergy, and district groups with their flag-wavers. The entire town mobilizes for this day, with decorated balconies, street illuminations, and brass bands following the parade. The most intense part of the festivities centers around this Sunday, often extending over nearly two weeks in recent years.
Since 2017, the festival has been enriched by the Palio del Santo, a popular event involving the town's districts that has given a new identity to the entire week of celebrations. Neighborhood teams compete in traditional local games, and the winning district earns the reproduction of the mitre of San Biagio: a symbolic trophy kept for a year, displayed with pride, and returned to the competition in the following edition.
The Palio serves a purpose beyond mere competition: it was created to mend the town's social fabric after difficult years, involve younger generations in local history, and restore a civic tradition that risked being lost. The districts spend months preparing for the challenges, costumes, and opening choreographies.
Alongside the religious observances, the municipal administration and the festival committee organize a calendar of civil events throughout the festival evenings. Recent editions have included concerts by nationally renowned artists—in 2023, the closing night featured Michele Zarrillo, followed by a musical fireworks display—alongside evenings of traditional Campanian folk music, cultural moments, historical presentations for schools, and family-friendly activities.
One of the most significant recent developments is the twinning with other cities dedicated to San Biagio, meaning towns that share him as their patron saint: Carosino in the province of Taranto, Maratea in Basilicata, and Castel San Giorgio, also in the province of Salerno. The agreement, signed during the festivities, aims to strengthen ties between these communities and promote reciprocal cultural and economic exchanges, with delegations meeting during their respective patronal festivals.
With just over ten thousand inhabitants in a territory of about five square kilometers, San Marzano sul Sarno is one of the most densely populated towns in the Sarno plain. It is located a short distance from Sarno, Scafati, Angri, and Nocera Inferiore, in a fertile lowland area that is historically the agricultural and canning heart of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese. Its inhabitants are called sammarzanesi, and the September festival is the occasion when many emigrants return home: during the festival evenings, the squares fill up, and the town's restaurants and fry shops stay busy until late at night.
Those wishing to experience the festival in its most authentic form should aim for the second Sunday of September, when the procession and the decisive Palio trials take place. The evenings are long and the weather is still summery: it is advisable to arrive early to secure a spot in the square. The events take place in the streets and public spaces of the town and are free, in the true style of Southern Italian patronal festivals.
At the time of writing, the Municipality of San Marzano sul Sarno has not yet released the dates and program for the 2026 San Biagio Patronal Festival. This is standard practice for patronal festivals in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area: the civil program is typically presented in a press conference just days before the festivities begin, usually at the start of September.
The fixed reference remains the second Sunday of September, the day the statue of San Biagio is carried in procession through the town's main streets. The evenings of the Palio del Santo—the district competition established in 2017 that awards the winner the reproduction of the patron's mitre—are centered around that Sunday. On February 3rd, the saint's liturgical day, the Municipality also organizes a day of celebrations in Piazza Umberto I.
Official information is published on the institutional website of the Municipality of San Marzano sul Sarno and on the Il Palio del Santo Facebook page, which provides updates on the districts and the competition trials. Local Agro newspapers (Ottopagine, Dentro Salerno, SalernoToday) usually release the full calendar on the day of the presentation.
This page will be updated as soon as the 2026 dates and program are announced by the organizers.
San Marzano sul Sarno is located in the Sarno plain, in the province of Salerno. By car, it is served by the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese motorway exits (Naples-Salerno axis and A30), just a few kilometers from Scafati, Angri, and Sarno. By train, the Circumvesuviana line stations of Sarno and Scafati are the closest, connected to the town by bus services. The reference airport is Naples-Capodichino, about forty kilometers away.
Religious celebrations are held in the parish church and along the main streets of the town; civil events, concerts, and the Palio del Santo trials take place in the central squares, with Piazza Umberto I serving as the institutional hub.
Free entry to all events in the square and the February 3rd celebrations. No ticketing is required.
Park in the peripheral streets and reach the center on foot: during festival evenings, traffic in the town center is restricted. For updated schedules, it is best to follow the Municipality's channels and the Il Palio del Santo Facebook page.
