The re-enactment of the 1421 siege and the Knights' Joust of the six districts of Angri
In the Municipality of Angri, in the province of Salerno, in the heart of the Agro nocerino-sarnese, the second half of September is dedicated to the Historical Palio of the City of Angri, one of the most deeply rooted historical re-enactments in Campania. The event was founded in 1992 with a clear goal: to remind the people of Angri of a specific episode in the city's history, the siege of the Angri fiefdom led by Andrea Fortebraccio da Montone on September 24, 1421.
For three days, the historic center, Castello Doria, and Piazza Doria become the stage for conferences, guided tours, historical theater performances, and processions in 15th-century costumes, leading up to the final day of the Knights' Joust. The Palio is promoted by the Municipality of Angri; its history is inextricably linked to the Compagnia dei Cavalieri di San Giuda Taddeo, an Angri-based association active since 1991 that managed its organization and equestrian events for years.
The historical narrative revolves around the Zurlo family, feudal lords of Angri in the 15th century, after whom Castello Zurolo is named. In addition to the siege of September 1421, the re-enactment stages the Day of Redemption of June 26, 1428, the other cornerstone of local memory. According to local tradition, the very origin of the Palio lies in the festivities and jousts that accompanied the visit of Queen Giovanna II to Angri, following the restoration of the fiefdoms to the Zurlo family in 1425.
The competitive heart of the event lies in the city's six historic districts, each with its own colors, coat of arms, and knight:
In the months leading up to the Palio, the districts prepare costumes, banners, and performers: the rivalry between the districts, which is entirely peaceful, is one of the ingredients that has kept the event alive for over thirty years.
Sunday is the highlight. The historical pageant travels through the main streets of the historic center with nobles, ladies, men-at-arms, musicians, and representatives of the six districts, ending in Piazza Doria. Immediately after, at the Pasquale Novi Municipal Stadium, the Knights' Joust takes place: the six knights compete in the ring test and the Saracen test, defending their district's colors with lance strikes. In the evening, back in Piazza Doria, the winning district is awarded the "Spada di Zurlo" (Sword of Zurlo) palio, also referred to in some sources as the "Spada di Zurolo".
The first few days are reserved for side events that add cultural depth to the re-enactment: a historical conference, guided tours of Angri's monuments, and historical theater performances, including the Archery Tournament and the Assaults on the Castle, a performance that reconstructs the 1421 siege and the subsequent Redemption of 1428.
The Historical Palio is now one of the events that best tells the story of the bond between Angri and its feudal past, and it is listed among Italian historical re-enactments by the Ministry of Culture's portal. Precisely because it is so deeply felt, it is not without debate: in 2025, some local scholars criticized the more romanticized parts of the reconstruction, opening a public discussion on the relationship between spectacle and historical sources. Over the years, the event has also experienced pauses and changes in organizational direction, always followed with great attention by the city.
The Palio is traditionally held in September, from Friday to Sunday, and is part of the calendar of events promoted by the Municipality of Angri. The 2026 edition is scheduled from September 25 to 27, with direction and dramaturgy entrusted to the Neapolitan actor and author Gianfranco Gallo, as part of the municipal "Angri, un'estate da vivere" festival, which runs from July 31 to October 3, 2026.
The 2026 edition of the Historical Palio of the City of Angri is scheduled from Friday, September 25 to Sunday, September 27, 2026, in the Municipality of Angri, in the province of Salerno. The announcement comes from the municipal calendar "Angri, un'estate da vivere", a series of 29 events that animate Castello Doria, Piazza Doria, and other symbolic places of the city from July 31 to October 3, 2026.
The main novelty concerns the artistic side: direction and dramaturgy are entrusted to Gianfranco Gallo, a Neapolitan actor and author who will inaugurate the same festival on July 31 with the theater-song show "Captivo". This is a sign of the desire to strengthen the theatrical aspect of the re-enactment, alongside the historical and equestrian components.
The structure of the event remains the established one: the first few days feature conferences, guided tours, and historical theater performances dedicated to the siege of the Angri fiefdom on September 24, 1421, and the Day of Redemption of June 26, 1428; on Sunday, the historical pageant travels along the main streets of the historic center, arriving at Piazza Doria, followed by the Knights' Joust at the Pasquale Novi Municipal Stadium, where the six districts and hamlets compete in the ring test and the Saracen test. In the evening, in Piazza Doria, the "Spada di Zurlo" palio is awarded to the winning district.
Angri is located along the Naples-Salerno axis, at the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. By train, the Angri station, on the Naples-Salerno line via Torre Annunziata, is on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, a few minutes' walk from the historic center and Piazza Doria. By car, take the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway; the reference airports are Naples Capodichino and Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi. During the historical pageant and the awards ceremony, the streets of the center and Piazza Doria are closed to traffic: it is advisable to park in areas outside the center and continue on foot.
The events in the municipal calendar are announced as free admission, subject to availability. The historical pageant can be followed freely along the streets of the historic center, while the Knights' Joust takes place at the Pasquale Novi Municipal Stadium: for times, access methods, and any reservations, it is advisable to check the communications of the Municipality of Angri in the days leading up to the event.
For the historical pageant and the awards ceremony in Piazza Doria, it is useful to arrive early to find a good spot. Late September evenings in Campania can be cool: it is better to bring a light jacket. The historic center is best explored on foot, wearing comfortable shoes.
