The neighborhood «fucaracchi» on the night of December 7th to 8th
Every year, on the night between December 7th and 8th, Castellammare di Stabia lights up with the Immaculate Conception Bonfires, known in the local dialect as «fucaracchi». To mark the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the neighborhoods of this city in the province of Naples build massive wooden towers that burn throughout the night in honor of the Virgin Mary. It is one of the most deeply felt rituals in all of Campania, where religious devotion and folklore merge into one great community celebration.
The origins of the tradition are rooted in an ancient legend. It is said that a local fisherman was caught in a violent storm; near death, he called upon the Madonna, who appeared to him in a vision. When he regained consciousness, he found himself safe and sound on the shore. To fulfill a vow, he promised to light a bonfire of thanksgiving on the beach every year. From that promise, the prayer vigil around the bonfires was born, which over time has transformed into a true competition between the neighborhoods.
The heart of the festival is the competition between the rioni (neighborhoods) of Castellammare: districts such as Acqua della Madonna, Annunziatella, Savorito, Moscarella, and Cicerone spend weeks collecting wood and materials to build the tallest and most impressive pyre. On the night of the Immaculate Conception, the fucaracchi are set ablaze almost simultaneously, creating a fiery spectacle across the city that reflects upon the sea.
The city gathers around the fires in a festive atmosphere: traditional songs are sung, including the classic «Fratielle e Surelle», fireworks are set off, and there is no shortage of performances by local neomelodic singers. It is a night of intense social connection, where entire families and different generations gather around the fire until dawn, blending the sacred and the profane.
Despite police checks, wood seizures, and organizational difficulties—such as those seen in the official 2025 edition, set up by the Municipality of Castellammare di Stabia on the beach—the tradition of the Immaculate Conception Bonfires continues to renew itself, primarily thanks to the neighborhoods. For the people of Stabia, it represents much more than a show: it is a piece of the city's identity and a living link to the faith and collective memory of Campania.
In 2026, the Immaculate Conception Bonfires of Castellammare di Stabia will be renewed on the night of December 7th to 8th. As every year, the neighborhoods of this city in the province of Naples will raise their woodpiles to ignite them in honor of the Virgin, in a blend of popular devotion, songs, and a festive atmosphere that involves entire families until dawn.
The bonfires are lit in the neighborhoods of Castellammare di Stabia—including Acqua della Madonna, Annunziatella, Savorito, Moscarella, and Cicerone—and along the shoreline, in the province of Naples.
On the night between December 7th and 8th, for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
