The patron saint of Capaccio Paestum celebrated every June 15th in Capaccio Scalo
Saint Vitus the Martyr is the patron saint of Capaccio Paestum, a municipality in the province of Salerno, Campania, world-famous for the Paestum archaeological site and its Greek temples. His feast day falls on June 15th, the day of the saint's liturgical solemnity, and for generations, it has marked the beginning of summer in the Cilento region. The heart of the festivities is Capaccio Scalo, the most populous district of the municipality, where the parish dedicated to the martyr is located: the Church of Saint Vitus, in Piazza Carlo Santini, serves as the starting and ending point for all the main moments of the festival.
Devotion to Saint Vitus is deeply rooted in the Cilento and Piana del Sele areas: according to tradition, the saint's martyrdom is linked to the lands crossed by the Sele River. It is no coincidence that, in addition to Capaccio Paestum, many other towns in the district — from Sapri to Pisciotta, from Felitto to Bellosguardo — celebrate Saint Vitus during the same week in mid-June. In Capaccio, the occasion is not merely religious: it is an identity-defining event that brings families together, draws back those living away, and fills the town streets until late at night.
The festival is tied to an agricultural custom passed down from father to son: on June 15th, the farmers of Capaccio gather wheat stalks and bring them to the church to be blessed. The gesture recalls a popular legend according to which Saint Vitus obtained that the top part of the stalk be spared, so as to be able to feed the dogs as well. From this also derives the custom, widespread in neighboring towns, of distributing taralli di San Vito along the procession route. It is a small but precious detail that tells the story of the bond between the festival and the agricultural vocation of the Piana del Sele better than anything else.
The structure of the festivities is that of a classic Southern patronal festival, with a religious component and a secular one that intertwine over several days. In documented editions, the program has included:
All celebrations are free to attend: for two evenings, the square becomes a large open-air living room, with stalls, nougat, balloons, and rides for the little ones.
To safely accommodate the thousands of people expected, the Municipality of Capaccio Paestum issues an ordinance every year that closes Piazza Carlo Santini to traffic — starting from the intersection with Viale della Repubblica and Via Italia '61 — and the entire Viale Padre Pio. The square thus transforms into a vast pedestrian area that hosts the open-air altar, the stage for performances, and the illuminations. It is the clearest evidence of how much the festival impacts the daily life of the city during those two days.
The Saint Vitus festival is the ideal opportunity to discover the daily and popular face of a destination that visitors know primarily for its archaeology. A few kilometers from the temples of Paestum, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the seafront of Laura and Licinella, Capaccio Scalo offers an authentic festival during these days, not built for tourism, where faith, brass bands, local gastronomy — from Buffalo Mozzarella Campana PDO to the Paestum Artichoke PGI — and village social life coexist naturally. Those visiting Cilento in mid-June can easily combine a morning at the Archaeological Park with an evening in the square, amidst the procession and live music.
The 2026 edition of the patronal festival of Saint Vitus the Martyr took place in Capaccio Scalo, a district of the Municipality of Capaccio Paestum (province of Salerno, Campania), on Sunday, June 14th, and Monday, June 15th, 2026, with the usual dual track of religious celebrations and secular events around the Church of Saint Vitus and Piazza Carlo Santini.
On June 11, 2026, the Municipal Police Command of Capaccio Paestum signed the ordinance regulating traffic for the two days of the festival. From 2:00 PM on June 14th to 2:00 AM on June 16th, 2026, a ban on traffic and parking with forced removal was established for all vehicle categories in Piazza Carlo Santini, starting from the intersection with Viale della Repubblica and Via Italia '61, and along the entire stretch of Viale Padre Pio. Emergency vehicles, law enforcement vehicles, those serving people with disabilities, and vehicles belonging to event staff were excluded from the ban.
The municipal administration justified the restrictions with the considerable influx of people expected in the square: a fact that confirms how the patron saint's festival remains, together with Carnival, the moment of greatest popular participation of the year in Capaccio Paestum. Local police and law enforcement guarded the area for the entire duration of the festivities.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition was not released online by the organizers: the only official information available concerns the dates and logistics of the festivities.
For the times of masses, the procession, and performances, it is advisable to contact the Saint Vitus Martyr Parish of Capaccio Paestum directly, as they publish the program in the days immediately preceding the festival.
The festivities are concentrated in Capaccio Scalo, a district of the Municipality of Capaccio Paestum (province of Salerno), around the Church of Saint Vitus the Martyr and Piazza Carlo Santini, 30 — 84047 Capaccio Paestum.
During the festival days, Piazza Carlo Santini and Viale Padre Pio are closed to traffic with a no-parking and towing zone: it is advisable to leave your car in the nearby streets and reach the center on foot. All religious celebrations and shows in the square are free. The detailed program is released by the Saint Vitus Martyr Parish in the days leading up to the festival (tel. +39 379 2388244, [email protected]).
