About Popolando

Every year in mid-August, the square of Borgo San Lazzaro—a small rural hamlet in the Persano district of Serre—becomes the beating heart of Campanian folk music. Popolando is a free-entry festival born from the local feast in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Tammorre drums, bottari percussionists, devotional chants, and Mediterranean rhythms fill the evenings under the stars, accompanied by food stalls featuring Piana del Sele specialties and exhibitions of antique farming tools.

Popolando: Folk music in the heart of the Piana del Sele

Popolando - Folk Music and Peasant Traditions Festival takes place every year in mid-August in Borgo San Lazzaro, a small rural hamlet in the Persano district, within the Municipality of Serre (Salerno province), in the heart of Campania. Far from being a detached event, the festival was born within the traditional feast honoring the Madonna delle Grazie and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is organized by the Borgo San Lazzaro Festival Committee, which transforms the village square into an open-air stage every summer. Admission to all concerts is free.

In just a few years, the event has become a landmark for folk music and rural culture in the Piana del Sele, successfully blending faith, community, and tradition in an authentic, inclusive atmosphere. The organizers' slogan perfectly captures the spirit of the festival: where devotion meets celebration and memory returns to dance.

Tammorre, bottari, and Mediterranean rhythms

The core of the festival is Campanian and Mediterranean folk music, presented each evening by groups and artists who specialize in traditional repertoires, ritual percussion, and contemporary reinterpretations of work and devotional songs. Over the years, the Borgo San Lazzaro stage has hosted beloved names from the Southern Italian folk scene, alongside local ensembles and regional dance schools.

  • Traditional percussion: tammorre, drums, and the barrels and vats of the bottari—instruments born from agricultural labor long before they became musical tools.
  • Folk and singer-songwriter music: ballads, tarantellas, and songs of work and migration, reimagined with modern arrangements.
  • Roaming folk dances: groups that parade through the village, engaging the audience before the concerts begin.

Concerts are held in the square late in the evening, when the summer heat of the Piana cools down and the village fills with visitors from neighboring towns in the Salerno province.

The Canto a Maria: Prayer turned into music

One of the most anticipated moments is the traditional Canto a Maria, a musical prayer that serves as one of the festival's most recognizable symbols, moving and involving the audience every year. This is where the festival reveals its deepest nature: Popolando is not just a concert series, but the musical soul of a religious feast that the Persano community has celebrated for generations.

The peasant world on display

Beside the stage, the festival dedicates significant space to the material memory of peasant civilization with an exhibition of antique farming tools and machinery. These everyday objects tell the story of Borgo San Lazzaro’s rural identity and the history of land reclamation and cultivation in the Piana del Sele. For younger visitors, it is a small open-air museum; for the locals, a way to ensure these traditions are not forgotten.

Popular flavors: The cuisine of the Piana

Gastronomy is handled by stalls set up in the festival area, offering dishes inspired by local culinary traditions and regional products. We are in the land of buffalo mozzarella and Piana del Sele vegetables; the dishes served during the evenings are simple, home-style meals designed to complement the concerts.

Persano, between the Sele River and the nature reserve

Persano is no ordinary hamlet. Nestled along the banks of the Sele river, it is home to the Royal Bourbon Hunting Lodge commissioned by Charles of Bourbon in the 18th century, the ancient military stud farm that gave rise to the prestigious Persano horse breed, and the WWF Oasis of Persano, a protected wetland famous for its otters. Festival-goers can easily combine an evening of music with a day exploring nature, Bourbon history, and the towns of the Piana del Sele, from the Alburni Mountains to the Cilento National Park.

Who is the festival for?

Popolando is a folk festival in the truest sense: free, open-air, and suitable for families with children, fans of Southern Italian traditional music, and travelers in Campania looking for authentic local celebrations rather than large commercial events. Those who love the tammurriata, devotional singing, and village festivals will find one of the most interesting calendars in the Salerno area this August.

Popolando — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Popolando takes place from August 18 to 20 in Borgo San Lazzaro, Persano, featuring three free-entry evenings held during the festivities in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The stage will host the Bottari di Macerata Campania of the Pastellesse Sound Group, Luca Rossi's 'Preghiera e Festa' concert, and a grand finale with Carlo Faiello and Capone & BungtBangt. The Canto a Maria, the antique tool exhibition, and food stalls are all confirmed.
