About Alfonso d'Aragona in Agropoli

Every late August, Agropoli travels back to 1487: the Alfonso d'Aragona Historical Re-enactment recreates the visit of the Duke of Calabria to the Angevin-Aragonese castle, where he arrived to inspect the fortress's reinforcement works. A costumed procession featuring ladies, knights, flag-wavers, and musicians winds through the town centre and climbs to the old town, amidst theatrical scenes, jugglers, and street performers. It is a free-entry event part of the municipal summer calendar, in the heart of the Cilento region, in the province of Salerno.

A night in 1487, between the town centre and the old town

In Agropoli, in the province of Salerno, the end of summer features a now-iconic appointment: the Alfonso d'Aragona Historical Re-enactment. For one night, the town centre and the old town shed their seaside resort persona and return to the 15th century, when the promontory was dominated by a contested fortress and life was confined within its walls. The central theme is a specific historical episode: the visit of Alfonso d'Aragona, Duke of Calabria, son of the King of Naples, who came to personally verify the progress of the castle's renovation works.

The historical event behind the festival

Chronicles place the Duke's stop in Agropoli in 1487, between October 5th and 6th, following a stop in Eboli during a journey through the Cilento. Alfonso stayed at the Agropoli Castle to oversee the progress of the fortress's renovation and adaptation works, at a historical turning point between the late Middle Ages and the Southern Renaissance. The re-enactment does not invent a legend: it takes that document and brings it to life with costumes, scenery, and reconstructed settings.

The historical pageant, from the square to the grand staircase

The heart of the evening is the costumed historical pageant. Ladies, knights, men-at-arms, flag-wavers, and musicians depart from the town centre and ascend towards the old town, with stops and scenic tableaux along the route: Piazza della Repubblica, Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the alleys of the historic centre, and the famous Ennio Balbo steps, the staircase leading to the castle entrance. At the top, in the moat and the fortress grounds, the theatrical narrative concludes with the Duke's arrival. In past editions, the route has been extended to the port, a sign that the event continues to grow year after year.

A village transformed

Surrounding the procession, the historic centre becomes a small period village. Recent editions have featured:

  • roving performances by jugglers, fire-eaters, and street artists;
  • displays by flag-wavers, musicians, and drummers;
  • sword duels and demonstrations of medieval daily life;
  • an exhibition of ancient torture instruments, which is both curious and very popular;
  • medieval games for children;
  • a food area with traditional dishes, set up during the opening evenings.

It is a formula that works because it combines historical reconstruction with popular engagement: you walk among the performers, stop to watch a scene, and climb towards the castle alongside the procession.

Organisers

The event is promoted by the Municipality of Agropoli and included in the city's summer calendar (currently Vivi Agropoli, previously also the Fuori le Mura festival). Organisation is entrusted to local entities—in recent years Amalphis and Cantiere Mati—with artistic direction by Antonio Speranza and the participation of historical groups and re-enactment associations from Southern Italy. The municipal administration has also presented the project "Alfonso d'Aragona Historical Pageant – Duke of Calabria visiting Agropoli" to the national fund of the Ministry of Culture dedicated to historical re-enactments: a sign of the desire to consolidate the event and further raise its philological quality.

Agropoli and the Cilento around the re-enactment

Agropoli is the northern gateway to the Cilento, in Campania: a promontory overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, an old town gathered beneath the castle, and a coastline that fills with visitors in summer. The re-enactment takes place in late August, when the season is still in full swing but the evenings begin to cool down, and it represents one of the defining moments of the calendar. Visitors can easily combine it with a day in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, the Paestum archaeological site just a few kilometres away, or the beaches of the Cilento coast.

Why it is worth attending

This is not a festival manufactured for tourists: it is a local story that starts from a verifiable episode and returns it to the city with meticulous costumes and theatrical direction. Admission is free, the natural setting—a real castle, a real staircase, a real village—and the nocturnal atmosphere do the rest. For those visiting the Cilento in late August, it is the easiest way to understand Agropoli's roots.
