About SoleArte

Every year on August 17th and 18th, the historic center of Santo Stefano del Sole transforms into an open-air museum. SoleArte, signs of a midsummer night, brings ancient Irpinian crafts, works by painters and sculptors, antiques and collectibles, street performers, and folk music into the narrow streets. Lit torches, blue and orange drapes, and suns suspended between balconies accompany two evenings of art, craftsmanship, and traditional rural food in the heart of Irpinia.

SoleArte, signs of a midsummer night

SoleArte is the festival that every year, on August 17th and 18th, brings the historic center of Santo Stefano del Sole to life—a small town in the province of Avellino, in Campania. Subtitled signs of a midsummer night, the event is organized by the Pro Loco Santostefanese and has been active since the nineties: two evenings where the village alleys become an open-air museum dedicated to art, craftsmanship, folk music, and traditional Irpinian cuisine. The organizers' stated goal is to showcase the region's excellence, revive the village's ancient trades, and promote emerging musical bands.

Ancient crafts brought back to life

The heart of SoleArte is the revival of old-time trades. Along the village streets, temporary workshops are set up by local artisans who work in front of the public, sharing skills passed down through generations.

  • blacksmiths working with metal
  • glove makers, shoemakers, and stonemasons
  • basket weavers, glassmakers, and woodcarvers
  • women embroidering, making lace, and working at the loom

Many of these are arts that have almost entirely disappeared: the Pro Loco recovers them every summer by contacting artisans, artists, and musicians from the town and the entire Irpinia region, so that younger generations can see techniques live that would otherwise only remain in their grandparents' stories.

Art, antiques, and collectibles

Alongside the workshops, local painters and sculptors exhibit their works directly in the alleys, courtyards, and under the arches of the historic center. There are also stalls dedicated to antiques and collectibles, where everyday objects, prints, ceramics, and small furnishings resurface, telling the story of village life before the earthquake and reconstruction.

Street performers and folk music

As evening falls, the village fills with street performers: magicians, mimes, fire-eaters, clowns, acrobats, and theater shows designed for children take turns along the route, turning every corner into a stage. On small stages set up in the squares, local and regional musical groups perform with repertoires ranging from folk music and tarantellas to covers and the great classics of Italian song. For many emerging Irpinian bands, SoleArte represents one of their first opportunities to play in front of a large audience.

The table of memory

The food and wine section does not chase trends: it aims instead to rediscover traditional peasant dishes that are rarely prepared today. At the stands set up in the alleys, you can taste foglie e patane (wild greens and potatoes), pork with potatoes and peppers, and bean and chickpea soups cooked according to old recipes, accompanied by wines and typical products of the area.

A village dressed in suns

The decor is an integral part of the festival's identity. The alleys are illuminated by torches and adorned with blue and orange drapes—the symbolic colors of SoleArte—while large decorative suns remain suspended between the balconies overlooking the streets, a direct reference to the town's name. It is an intimate, nocturnal, and highly photogenic atmosphere, which explains why the event attracts visitors from all over the province of Avellino and the Naples area.

Santo Stefano del Sole, between Irpinia and Terminio

Santo Stefano del Sole is located a few kilometers from Avellino, in the Sabato Valley, at the foot of the Terminio massif. The town preserves an urban layout made of alleys, stairways, and small courtyards that lends itself perfectly to a widespread event like this. SoleArte is the highlight of the municipal summer program Vivi Santo Stefano, promoted by the municipal administration together with the Pro Loco and local associations, which offers festivals, concerts, patron saint celebrations, and family initiatives between July and September.

SoleArte — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of SoleArte is confirmed for August 17th and 18th in the historic center of Santo Stefano del Sole. The Pro Loco Santostefanese brings back ancient crafts, artisan stalls, antiques and collectibles, works by Irpinian painters and sculptors, street performers, and folk music to the alleys, along with stands dedicated to traditional peasant dishes. The detailed program will be released in the weeks leading up to the event.

SoleArte 2026: appointment on August 17th and 18th

The dates for the new edition of SoleArte - Signs of a Midsummer Night are confirmed: the festival will be held on August 17th and 18th, 2026 in the historic center of Santo Stefano del Sole, in the province of Avellino. The event appears in both the municipal summer calendar Vivi Santo Stefano 2026 and the annual program of Irpinian Pro Loco associations, with organization entrusted as always to the Pro Loco Santostefanese.

What to expect

The formula remains the one consolidated over the years: two evenings spread along the village alleys, illuminated by torches and adorned with blue and orange drapes and suns suspended between the balconies. The route alternates between ancient craft workshops, exhibitions by local painters and sculptors, antique and collectible stalls, street performer shows, and concerts by folk music groups, with food stands dedicated to traditional Irpinian peasant recipes.

The rest of the summer in Santo Stefano del Sole

SoleArte is part of a particularly rich summer program, which in 2026 includes, among other things, the Cherry Festival in June, the Nova Summer Season in July, the sunset concert by Peppe Barra on July 26th, the festivities of Santo Stefano Protomartire on August 2nd and 3rd, and those of San Vito Martire from August 26th to 30th.

Programme SoleArte 2026

The detailed program for the 2026 edition - including the list of artisans, exhibiting artists, street companies, and musical groups - has not yet been published by the Pro Loco Santostefanese. However, the dates, August 17th and 18th, 2026, and the usual layout of the festival are confirmed: a widespread exhibition route in the alleys of the historic center with ancient craft workshops, an art, antique, and collectible section, street performer shows in the squares, folk music concerts, and food and wine stands dedicated to traditional cuisine.
