About Presenzano Patronal Festival

Every summer, Presenzano, a small village in the province of Caserta overlooking the Volturno Valley, gathers to honor its two patron saints: Saint Nicholas of Bari and Saint Anthony of Padua. These summer celebrations, designed for both locals and returning visitors, blend religious services, processions, brass band parades through the historic center, open-air concerts, and spectacular fireworks. Three days of free civic and religious festivities in the heart of the Alto Casertano region.

An August festival for the two patrons of Presenzano

In Presenzano, a town of just over 1,600 residents in the Province of Caserta, Campania, the religious calendar features two major events: the liturgical feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari, celebrated in December with the traditional distribution of bread rolls, and that of Saint Anthony of Padua, which falls in June. In August, however, the town chooses to unite its two patrons in a single, grand civic and religious festival: the so-called summer celebrations, a time when the community is at its fullest, with families of emigrants returning for their holidays and visitors passing through the Alto Casertano area.

A community rite rather than a tourist show

The festival was not born as a tourist attraction, but as a moment for the town to reconnect with itself. The focal point is the Saint Nicholas Parish, which officiates the celebrations at the Church of the SS. Annunziata, while the Municipality of Presenzano and local associations handle the civic side. The result is a typically Southern Italian blend: the devotion of the procession and the lightheartedness of the town square coexist in the same program, seamlessly.

How the days unfold

The schedule, repeated year after year, follows the classic pattern of Southern Italian patronal festivals:

  • At dawn: Opening fireworks announce the start of the festivities, followed by the brass band parading through the town streets.
  • In the morning: Holy Mass at the Church of the SS. Annunziata and a traveling band concert leading to Piazza ai Caduti.
  • In the late afternoon: Solemn Mass and procession with the statues of the patrons through the streets of the historic center.
  • In the evening: Concerts and musical shows in the square, featuring dance orchestras, traditional Neapolitan groups, and guest artists.
  • Late at night: The grand fireworks display, anticipated by the whole town and visible from the valley below.

The 2025 edition, between Sanremo and Naples

In 2025, the celebrations were held from August 10th to 12th. Sunday opened with 8:00 AM fireworks and the band parade, followed by Mass and an evening procession, then the "Orchestra spettacolo da Sanremo a Sanremo" show along with "Napoli prima e dopo in tour". Monday was dedicated to a concert by Marco Morandi, followed at midnight by fireworks; Tuesday concluded with a musical show by the group La Nuova Storia. All events were free to attend.

Presenzano, the ancient Rufrae

The festival is also an opportunity to discover a village worth the detour. Presenzano climbs a hill dominated by the ruins of a Norman castle, with its polygonal masonry walls, and preserves the Romanesque Church of Saint Nicholas and the 17th-century Ducal Palace of the Del Balzo family. At the foot of the historic center, in the Taverna San Felice area, remain the traces of the amphitheater of ancient Rufrae, a Samnite city mentioned by Horace: the area has yielded terracotta votive statuettes from the 4th century BC. From the town streets, the view stretches over the Volturno plain and the large reservoirs of the "Domenico Cimarosa" hydroelectric plant.

A good reason to stop in August

Those passing through the Alto Casertano during the week of Ferragosto will find an authentic, free, and family-friendly festival here, far from the large coastal crowds. It is the best way to understand how summer is experienced in the inland villages of Campania: evenings in the square, the band passing by your house, and the sky lighting up above the castle.
