The January bonfires and the September patronal feast in the village of San Clemente
In the small municipality of Galluccio, at the foot of the extinct volcano of Roccamonfina in the province of Caserta, the figure of Saint Anthony Abbot is at the heart of community life in the hamlet of San Clemente. Here, the hermit saint is honored at two distinct times of the year: the liturgical feast on January 17th, with its night of bonfires, and the patronal feast in September, which closes the summer with days of music and conviviality in Piazza Umberto I.
The oldest and most evocative part is the winter celebration. On the eve and the day of the feast, large bonfires are lit in various areas of the village, following a rural tradition linked to the protection that Saint Anthony Abbot offers to domestic animals and stables. On the evening of January 17th, after the evening Holy Mass, the statue of the saint is carried in procession through parts of the village, pausing at the spots where the most impressive fires are burning, accompanied by the Calvi Risorta Music Band and local confraternities.
With the arrival of early autumn, the organizing committee renews the civil festivities in Piazza Umberto I. The square of San Clemente hosts concerts by major names in Italian musicโin recent years, artists like Nomadi and Matia Bazar have performed hereโalongside dance evenings, food stalls, and moments of gathering for the entire community and visitors from neighboring towns.
Around the bonfires and during the patronal evenings, there is no shortage of popular gastronomy from the Caserta area: sausages and potatoes cooked under the ashes and embers, roasted chestnuts, bruschetta, local cheeses, and cured meats, accompanied by the renowned wines of the Galluccio area, a land of high-quality oenological production.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover the heritage of Galluccio: the Collegiate Church of Santo Stefano, the "Natura Viva" naturalistic museum at Palazzo Seccareccia, and the hills that lead to the Roccamonfina Regional Park. An event that intertwines faith, folklore, and identity in the heart of inland Campania.
In January 2026, the community of San Clemente renewed the ritual of the Saint Anthony Abbot bonfires: large fires lit in various areas of the village and, on the evening of January 17th, the procession of the saint's statue accompanied by the Calvi Risorta Music Band. In view of the September patronal festivities, the Saint Anthony Abbot Festival Committee 2026 also promoted fundraising initiatives, including the "November Wine" food and wine event on November 29th and 30th, 2025, in Piazza Umberto I.
