The Patronal Feast of Viticuso

The Patronal Feast of Saint Antoninus the Martyr is the most important event of the year in Viticuso, a small mountain town in the province of Frosinone, southern Lazio, near the border with Molise. Every year on September 1st and 2nd, the village celebrates its protector, Saint Antoninus of Apamea, with a rich religious and secular program that involves the entire community and the many emigrants who return specifically to their hometown for the occasion.

The Novena and the Eve

The festivities are preceded by a long spiritual journey: starting August 23rd, a solemn novena is held at the sanctuary dedicated to Saint Antoninus, located just outside the town center. On August 31st, the eve of the feast, the community gathers for a prayer vigil in the saint's chapel, an intimate moment that precedes the most intense days of celebration.

The Procession from the Sanctuary

The heart of the festival occurs on the evening of September 1st, when the atmosphere reaches its peak: at sunset, the statue of Saint Antoninus leaves the sanctuary and descends in a procession toward the village to meet the waiting population. The procession, illuminated by torches and accompanied by a brass band, has often been led by the Bishop of the Diocese of Sora-Cassino-Aquino-Pontecorvo, Monsignor Gerardo Antonazzo, alongside local priests. The statue is finally brought into the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta amidst hymns and prayers.

The Day of Saint Antoninus

On September 2nd, the festival continues with a solemn Eucharistic celebration, presided over in the square by the Bishop or diocesan priests, followed by the return procession. This is the moment when popular devotion is expressed most intensely: in past homilies, the Bishop has repeatedly recalled the example of the martyr saint as a guide of faith for the community, both in Italy and abroad.

The Secular Festival: Music and Fireworks

Alongside the religious program, the Festival Committee organizes traditional secular events: brass band concerts—such as the performance by the «Don Bosco Città di Cassino» band directed by Maestro Marcello Bruni in 2018—evening musical entertainment in the square, and a fireworks display that concludes the festivities. Participation is free and open to the entire village.

A Reunited Community

For Viticuso, the feast of Saint Antoninus is much more than a religious recurrence: it is the moment when the village becomes whole again. Viticusani emigrants, who moved abroad or to large cities over the decades, return every year for the first few days of September, testifying to a deep attachment to their land of origin and local traditions. Diocesan chronicles consistently document the editions of recent years, a sign of a living and consolidated tradition.
