Devotion to the Physician Saints and live music in Teano, featuring liturgy, processions, and late September evenings
The Patronal Feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian is one of the most cherished events in the devotional calendar of Teano, a town in the Alto Casertano area of the province of Caserta, in northern Campania. The festivities revolve around the liturgical memorial of the two Physician Saints, set for September 26th, and typically extend through the final days of the month, when the parish community enlivens the streets with solemn celebrations, illuminations, and evening events.
Cosmas and Damian are venerated as anargyroi, meaning physicians who provided their services without asking for money. Devotion to the two brothers, widespread throughout Southern Italy and particularly in Campania and Puglia, links them to the healing of body and soul: this is why their feast retains a strongly popular character everywhere, filled with ex-votos, prayers for the sick, and a level of participation that goes far beyond the circle of regular churchgoers.
In Teano, the cult of the Physician Saints is tied to the Church of Santa Maria la Nova, where the statues of the two saints were recently restored and returned to the veneration of the faithful, and to the Parish of Saints Cosmas and Damian, located on Viale Europa, which serves as the main organizational hub for the festival. The central days feature solemn masses, a procession through the town center, and traditional accompanying events: market stalls, illuminations, and music.
As is the case with many patronal feasts in Campania, a secular program organized by the festival committee runs alongside the liturgical events. For the 2026 edition, the most anticipated announcement arrived well in advance, back in February: the stage will host Alunni del Sole, the historic Neapolitan group active since the late sixties and authors of tracks that have entered the Italian collective memory, such as L'Aquilone, Concerto, and 'A Canzuncella. The concert is scheduled for Sunday, September 27, 2026.
Visitors arriving for the festival will find a town that deserves more than a quick visit. Teano is the heir to Teanum Sidicinum, capital of the Italic Sidicini people and, in Roman times, one of the most important centers in Upper Campania: this is evidenced by the large Roman theater, rebuilt in the Severan age, and the Archaeological Museum of Teanum Sidicinum. The medieval historic center houses the cathedral dedicated to Saint Paride ad Fontem, the city's patron saint celebrated in August, while Teano's name entered history books for the historic meeting between Giuseppe Garibaldi and Victor Emmanuel II on October 26, 1860. The municipal territory, one of the largest in the province, is crossed by the Via Francigena del Sud.
This is the ideal time to discover the Alto Casertano region: late September temperatures are still mild, the countryside is in the midst of the grape harvest, and in the following weeks, Teano hosts other popular events. Those with a weekend to spare can combine the festival with a visit to the Roman theater, a stop along the Via Francigena del Sud, and a break in the nearby thermal and hilly areas of Roccamonfina, the extinct volcano that frames the city's northern horizon.
The 2026 calendar for the feast in honor of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Teano, in the province of Caserta, opened with an unexpected announcement for the season: as early as late February, the name of the musical guest for the main evening was revealed, Alunni del Sole, expected on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
Born in the late sixties around the Neapolitan brothers Paolo and Bruno Morelli, Alunni del Sole linked their name to titles such as L'Aquilone, Concerto, Jenny e la bambola, and above all 'A Canzuncella, which became a classic of modern Neapolitan song and has been covered over the years by numerous performers. With the song Liรน, the group won the 1978 Festivalbar. After the passing of Paolo Morelli in 2013, Bruno Morelli reformed the group to keep the repertoire alive.
The religious part of the festival develops around the musical evening, linked to the liturgical memorial of the two 'anargyroi' saints on September 26th: solemn masses, prayer moments, and the procession with the statues of the Physician Saints through the streets of Teano's center. These are the days when the town is adorned with illuminations and market stalls occupy the squares of the historic center.
The complete program of festivities, including times for celebrations and secular events, is usually released in the weeks immediately preceding the event through the channels of the Parish of Saints Cosmas and Damian and the local press of the Alto Casertano.
By car: the nearest motorway exit is Caianello on the A1 Rome-Naples, just a few kilometers from the center of Teano. By train: the Teano station is located on the Rome-Cassino-Naples railway line, connected to the historic center by a short car or bus ride. By plane: the reference airport is Naples Capodichino, about an hour away.
During the festival evenings, the historic center is largely pedestrianized: it is best to leave your car in parking areas outside the old town and continue on foot.
Religious celebrations and events in the squares are traditionally free to access. There is no online presale active for the concert: for confirmation, it is best to follow the channels of the Parish of Saints Cosmas and Damian and the Municipality of Teano.
It is advisable to book accommodation in advance: supply in the center of Teano is limited, while the Roccamonfina area offers farmhouses and small guest houses. It is useful to bring a light jacket for the evening, as temperatures drop significantly in the hills.
