On September 1st, Pietravairano honors its patron saint with processions, brass bands, and the traditional 'Flight of the Angel'.
Sant'Eraclio, bishop and martyr, is the patron saint of Pietravairano, a small town of nearly three thousand residents nestled 250 meters above sea level in the Alto Casertano area of the Campania region. September 1st has been the day dedicated to his feast since time immemorial: a fixed date that the town continues to honor with sacred celebrations and public festivities that attract neighbors from surrounding areas.
The roots of this cult are ancient and well-documented. The parish archive of the Church of Sant'Eraclio houses a 13th-century parchment related to the saint, which was studied by historian and lawyer Renato Cifonelli in his 2012 book, «Sant'Eraclio vescovo e martire Patrono di Pietravairano». This documentary heritage gives the occasion a depth far beyond a simple calendar date.
On the patronal feast day, the parish church transforms: it is draped in damask and bathed in light, while the precious silver image of the saint is displayed beneath a sumptuous canopy, surrounded by carefully selected flowers and the glow of votive candles. It is the most recognizable image of the festival, leaving a lasting impression on first-time visitors to Pietravairano.
September 1st is marked by two processions—one in the morning and one in the afternoon—that accompany the saint's statue through the village streets. At the end of the afternoon procession, the most anticipated moment takes place: the Flight of the Angel, a evocative ritual held in the Sant'Eramo district that has been performed in Pietravairano for at least two centuries.
Tradition holds that until about a century ago, the flight was performed with a living child suspended above the crowd; today, a statue crafted by Neapolitan artisans is used instead, descending toward the image of the saint amidst the applause of the faithful. It is a gesture that is both simple and theatrical, capturing the essence of Southern Italian popular religiosity in just a few minutes.
Alongside the liturgical aspects, the patronal festival has always reserved a prominent role for music. Renowned brass bands from various parts of Southern Italy perform throughout the day, from morning marches to evening concerts in the square. In recent years, the program has expanded to include dance performances and tarantella, extending the festivities after the procession and bringing together families, young people, and visitors.
It is an event of special significance for those who have emigrated or left the town; many return at the end of August to reconnect with relatives and friends, making the festival a vital moment for community cohesion.
Visitors arriving for the festival will find a village worth exploring regardless of the calendar. Above the town, on Mount San Nicola, lies one of the most unique archaeological sites in inland Campania: the Italic theater-temple, arranged on two terraces overlooking the valley. The municipal territory also includes the hamlet of San Felice and opens onto a landscape of olive groves and vineyards typical of the Caserta hinterland.
On September 1st, 2026, Pietravairano renews its appointment with its patron saint. The date never changes: it is the day that this town in the Alto Casertano has dedicated to Sant'Eraclio, bishop and martyr, since time immemorial, with sacred celebrations and public events.
As every year, the parish church will be adorned with damask drapes and illuminated for the feast around the precious silver image of the saint. The two processions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, will traverse the historic center; at the end of the second, the Flight of the Angel will take place in the Sant'Eramo district, the most anticipated ritual for the community.
At the moment, the detailed public program has not yet been released: updates on times, brass band concerts, and performances in the square will be communicated by the parish and the municipal administration in the weeks immediately preceding the festival.
Pietravairano (Postcode 81040), Province of Caserta, Campania. Celebrations take place at the parish church of Sant'Eraclio and along the streets of the historic center; the Flight of the Angel is held in the Sant'Eramo district.
By car: Take the Caianello exit on the A1 Milan-Naples motorway, then follow provincial roads toward the Vairano valley. By train: The nearest station is Vairano-Caianello, on the Rome-Cassino-Naples line, located just a few kilometers from the town.
Religious celebrations, processions, and public performances are free to attend.
Mass and procession times are announced by the parish in the days leading up to the festival: it is best to check locally or at the Town Hall. The historic center has narrow, partially uphill streets; it is recommended to park at the entrance of the town and proceed on foot wearing comfortable shoes.
