The Easter Monday festival in the heart of the ancient San Michele district of Nicosia
The Saint Michael the Archangel Festival is considered one of the most ancient and identity-defining traditions of Nicosia, a town in the province of Enna nestled in the Sicilian hinterland. The festival comes to life in the historic San Michele district, one of the oldest and most characteristic neighborhoods in the town, located in the lower eastern part of the urban center. For two days, the district becomes a hub of devotion, music, and folk traditions in the name of the Archangel who bears its name.
The festival falls on Easter Monday. It is a tradition so deeply rooted that in Nicosia, the actual Easter Monday holiday is celebrated the following day, on Tuesday (the so-called "marte de litria"): Monday belongs entirely to Saint Michael and involves the whole city, not just the district.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the Church of San Michele, a building of medieval origin that retains a basilica plan with three naves, white stone columns, and pointed arches, with a facade remodeled in the 18th century. Inside, it houses one of the most beloved works of Sicilian art: the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel created by sculptor Stefano Li Volsi, which depicts the Archangel in the act of defeating the devil, with a silver spear and a shield engraved with the words "Quis ut Deus".
Celebrations open on Sunday with a solemn mass presided over by the Bishop of Nicosia and a fraternal Agape in Piazza San Michele. On Monday, the festival begins to the sound of drums, with performances by the San Felice marching band and majorettes. The two district confraternities, San Michele and the Santissimo Sacramento di San Michele, participate. In the late afternoon, the effigy of Saint Michael the Archangel leaves the church and travels in procession through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by a long parade of the faithful, the confraternities, and the band, with a significant stop in front of the town hall in Piazza Garibaldi.
Among the most characteristic elements are the traditional games. Before the procession, the faithful enjoy fennel and lettuce and engage in the "ciappette" game in the spaces behind the church. The evening concludes with a fireworks display and the traditional 'Ntenna, the classic greasy pole game, which in Nicosia comes in several variations: the pole, the rope, and the horseback versions. Musical entertainment and local groups enliven the festival until late at night.
The Saint Michael the Archangel Festival is much more than a procession: it is the moment when an entire community gathers around its patron saint and its centuries-old traditions. For those visiting inland Sicily during the Easter holidays, the San Michele district of Nicosia offers an authentic immersion into popular religiosity and the folklore of the Nebrodi and Erei mountains.
The 2026 edition opened on Sunday, April 5, with a solemn mass presided over by the Bishop of Nicosia and a fraternal Agape in Piazza San Michele, enlivened by the group "Disco Allegria". On Monday, April 6, the festival began to the sound of drums, with the San Felice marching band and majorettes, and the traditional "ciappette" game.
In the late afternoon, the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel left the church to process through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the faithful, the district confraternities, and the band, with a stop in front of the town hall in Piazza Garibaldi. The evening concluded with fireworks and the traditional 'Ntenna, accompanied by musical entertainment from the acoustic duo "Ilenia e Adriano", DJ Enzo, and the Movida Group.

The festival takes place every year on Easter Monday, with celebrations beginning on Easter Sunday.
Access to the celebrations, the procession, and the festivities in the San Michele district is free and open to all.
