The feast of Leonforte's primary patron saint, blending faith, a silver float, and fireworks
In the heart of central Sicily, in the town of Leonforte (Enna), the Patronal Feast of Maria SS. del Carmelo is the most deeply felt religious and popular event of the year. Known to locals by the affectionate dialect name "A Matri 'o Carminu", the Madonna del Carmelo is the town's primary patron saint, and her feast involves the entire community in a week of devotion, tradition, and celebration.
The liturgical feast of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel falls on July 16th, but in Leonforte, it is celebrated on August 16th. The reason is deeply linked to the town's agricultural history: in the past, during mid-July, the people of Leonforte were busy in the fields harvesting grain and could not dedicate themselves to the festivities. The celebration was thus moved to August, when agricultural work allowed for a break, establishing a custom that continues to this day.
The cult of the Madonna del Carmelo is tied to the gratitude of the Leonforte people, who attribute the city's protection during a plague epidemic to the Virgin. The feast is preceded by a novena of nine days of prayer, during which the faithful renew their devotion. The precious statue of the Madonna, depicting Mary with Blessed Simon Stock, was carved by the sculptor Gaspare Lo Giudice.
On the day of the feast, following the solemn afternoon Eucharistic celebration at the Mother Church, the statue is slid onto rails on the churchyard and placed upon the majestic silver and mixed-metal float (the "vara"), adorned with intricate decorations and paintings. The evening procession then begins: the float travels along Corso Umberto, the town's main street, illuminated for the occasion, amidst devotional songs in dialect, marching band music, and a large crowd, until it reaches Piazza Cappuccini, where a fireworks display lights up the sky.
The festivities do not end in a single day; they conclude with the octave on August 23rd. After the holy masses celebrated throughout the day, in the evening, the Mother of Carmel is bid farewell on the churchyard of the Mother Church with the traditional and moving waving of white handkerchiefs—a collective gesture of affection and farewell before the statue returns to the altar.
Accompanying the religious aspect, starting from August 13th, Corso Umberto hosts a street fair with stalls, local products, and sweets, transforming the center of Leonforte into a meeting place for residents and visitors alike. The Carmelo Feast remains one of the most authentic expressions of popular religiosity and the identity of this inland Sicilian town.
The 2026 Carmelo Feast in Leonforte confirms the traditional dates: August 16, 2026 for the main day and August 23, 2026 for the concluding octave. After the preparatory novena and the street fair along Corso Umberto starting August 13, the statue of the Madonna, a work by Gaspare Lo Giudice, will parade on the majestic silver float during the evening procession on August 16, accompanied by the marching band to Piazza Cappuccini for the fireworks display.
The detailed program of religious and civil events (mass times, concerts, shows) is generally released by the parish and local authorities in the weeks preceding the feast.
