The Marian devotion of Sperlinga, featuring illuminated arches, processions, and fireworks in the rock-hewn village of the Enna province.
In the village of Sperlinga, nestled in the rock in the heart of the Enna province and famous for its sandstone-carved castle, the Madonna della Mercede Festival is one of the most anticipated events on the religious calendar. Celebrated during the fourth week of September (traditionally linked to September 24, the feast day of Our Lady of Mercy), the festival involves the entire community in a blend of faith, tradition, and collective memory that is renewed from generation to generation.
The heart of the celebration is the journey of the statue of the Madonna. On the eve of the event, the statue is solemnly moved from the Church of the Madonna della Mercede, located at the foot of the castle, to the Mother Church of San Giovanni Battista. Along the road connecting the two places of worship, striking illuminated arches are set up, creating a frame of light through which the Virgin descends toward the center of the village.
For several days, the statue remains in the Mother Church, where it is visited by the faithful of Sperlinga and those returning to the village from neighboring towns and further afield, in a moment of deep reflection and community gathering.
The highlight arrives on Sunday, with the grand procession winding through the main streets of the village, accompanied by authorities, a marching band, and a crowd of devotees. At the end, in the square in front of the Mother Church, a fireworks display illuminates the village sky. Only after these festivities does the statue return to its church at the foot of the castle, completing the ritual cycle that unites faith and popular participation.
The cult of the Madonna della Mercede in Sperlinga dates back to the early 18th century, with the birth of a religious congregation dedicated to her veneration. The Church of the Madonna della Mercede was built around the mid-18th century and restored in 1822, while the Mother Church of San Giovanni Battista, constructed between 1597 and 1610 thanks to the collaboration of the entire population, preserves the historical bond between the town and its patron saint. Inside the Church of the Mercede, a 1706 painting depicting the Madonna, the work of the priest Lorenzo Bellomo, and a 19th-century wooden statue from a Palermo workshop are preserved.
Participating in the Madonna della Mercede Festival means discovering the most authentic soul of Sperlinga, one of the most evocative villages in central Sicily, nicknamed the "Sicilian Matera" for its houses carved into the rock. Amidst the illuminated streets, the devotion of the faithful, and the hospitality of the community, the festival offers an experience that blends spirituality, culture, and the popular traditions of the Enna hinterland.
The 2026 Madonna della Mercede Festival in Sperlinga is scheduled for Sunday, September 27, following the custom that links the event to the fourth week of September. The village in the Enna province is preparing to renew the ritual that sees the statue of the Virgin descend from the church at the foot of the castle to the Mother Church of San Giovanni Battista, through the evocative frame of illuminated arches.
The detailed program of celebrations, including precise times for religious services, the procession, and fireworks, is generally released by the Municipality and the parish in the weeks leading up to the festival. We recommend checking official channels for updates.
