The devotional procession that brings together Sperlinga and pilgrims from Nicosia every August 18th

The Santa Liberata Festival is one of the most deeply felt events of the year in Sperlinga, a small mountain town in the province of Enna nestled between the Nebrodi and Madonie mountains, and officially recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. Every August 18th, the town, dominated by its extraordinary sandstone-carved castle, gathers for a procession that carries the image of the saint through the historic center, amidst prayers, hymns, and intense, deeply rooted popular participation.
Unlike many centuries-old patronal feasts, the cult of Santa Liberata in Sperlinga is relatively recent: it dates back to the 1920s and stems from a grace received by workers building the State Road 120. According to tradition, a devout worker, after invoking the saint, placed an image of her at the site where he received the grace, thus sparking the devotion. Since then, the festival has become deeply embedded in the community and has grown year after year.
One of the most distinctive features of the festival is the arrival of numerous pilgrims from nearby Nicosia, a city linked to Sperlinga by centuries of shared history. Faithful travel along the road connecting the two towns to reach the village and join the procession, a gesture of devotion that renews the bond between these two Nebrodi-area communities every year.
The Santa Liberata Festival is part of the town's rich summer calendar, which in mid-August also hosts the famous Tortone Festival and the Historical Pageant of the Lady of the Castles of Sicily, both dedicated to the castle's medieval history and the Gallo-Italic lands of Sicily. Visitors to Sperlinga during these days find different yet complementary atmospheres: the historical and gastronomic reenactment on August 16th and the solemn religious devotion on August 18th—two sides of the same Sicilian village.
Participating in the Santa Liberata Festival means stepping into the authentic heart of a small village in inland Sicily, far from the main tourist circuits. The procession through houses partially carved into the rock, at the foot of the Norman castle, offers an intimate and evocative experience where popular faith intertwines with the ancient history of Sperlinga and the rugged, fascinating landscape of the Enna hinterland.
The 2026 edition of the Santa Liberata Festival in Sperlinga (province of Enna) has not yet been officially scheduled. The festival traditionally falls on August 18th, the day of the devotional procession that crosses the village, drawing faithful and pilgrims, particularly from nearby Nicosia. The detailed program and schedule will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Sperlinga is located in north-central Sicily, in the province of Enna, about 47 km from the provincial capital and a few kilometers from Nicosia. By car, it can be reached via the SS 120; the nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Palermo. The festival takes place in the historic center, around the town's churches.
The Santa Liberata Festival is celebrated every year on August 18th with a solemn procession. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: it is advisable to check with the Municipality of Sperlinga and the local parish as summer approaches.
Admission to the festival is free. It is worth combining your visit with the rock-hewn castle of Sperlinga and, on the same days, the Tortone Festival and the Historical Pageant of the Lady of the Castles. For accommodation, you can stay in Nicosia or other towns in the Enna hinterland.
