This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Capuchin Friars Living Nativity is one of the most beloved and deeply rooted Christmas traditions in the town of Nicosia, located in the province of Enna, in the heart of the Nebrodi range. Every year, during the holiday season, the Capuchin Friars' Garden—with its centuries-old trees, dry-stone walls, and ancient convent structures—becomes the natural backdrop for this re-enactment of the Bethlehem Nativity.
Organized by the Friars Minor Capuchin alongside numerous local actors and extras, the Nicosia living nativity is a well-established tradition: the 2024-2025 edition, titled «Christmas, Light of the Soul – We Have All Been Children», marked the thirty-seventh year of the event. It is a journey rooted in the Franciscan spirit, drawing inspiration from the very first nativity scene created by Saint Francis in Greccio.
Along the path winding through the garden, visitors encounter dozens of performers in period costumes who faithfully recreate the Bethlehem of two thousand years ago. Highlights include:
What makes this nativity scene special is the dialogue between past and present: the charm of the convent garden, the warm glow of the torches, and the scents of food prepared on-site create a multi-sensory experience. The event is free of charge and highly anticipated by the Nicosia community, drawing visitors from across the province of Enna and inland Sicily, cementing its status as one of the most representative Christmas events in the region.
The 2026 edition of the Capuchin Friars Living Nativity in Nicosia is anticipated during the usual Christmas holiday period. As of now, dates and the 2026 program have not yet been published: historically, the re-enactment is held between December 25th, the following days, and Epiphany in the Capuchin Friars' Garden. We recommend checking for updates on the official website and booking in advance, given the high turnout that characterizes the event every year.
The event takes place in the Capuchin Friars' Garden in Nicosia (EN), with access from the convent side. We recommend wearing comfortable, warm clothing suitable for an outdoor evening walk.
By car: Nicosia can be reached via the SS117 and SS120 roads; it is about an hour and a half from Enna and Catania. The most convenient train stations are in Catania or Enna, from where you can continue by bus or car.
