The Capuchin Friars Living Nativity is one of the most beloved and deeply rooted Christmas traditions in the town of Nicosia, located in the province of Enna, in the heart of the Nebrodi range. Every year, during the holiday season, the Capuchin Friars' Garden—with its centuries-old trees, dry-stone walls, and ancient convent structures—becomes the natural backdrop for this re-enactment of the Bethlehem Nativity.

A tradition spanning nearly forty years

Organized by the Friars Minor Capuchin alongside numerous local actors and extras, the Nicosia living nativity is a well-established tradition: the 2024-2025 edition, titled «Christmas, Light of the Soul – We Have All Been Children», marked the thirty-seventh year of the event. It is a journey rooted in the Franciscan spirit, drawing inspiration from the very first nativity scene created by Saint Francis in Greccio.

The route and the scenes

Along the path winding through the garden, visitors encounter dozens of performers in period costumes who faithfully recreate the Bethlehem of two thousand years ago. Highlights include:

• the Nativity hut featuring the Holy Family;
• workshops of ancient trades: the blacksmith, the carpenter, the baker, and the spinners;
• scenes of daily village life, featuring shepherds, merchants, and farmers;
• spaces for spiritual reflection that weave the Gospel narrative with themes of contemporary relevance.

A unique atmosphere in the heart of Sicily

What makes this nativity scene special is the dialogue between past and present: the charm of the convent garden, the warm glow of the torches, and the scents of food prepared on-site create a multi-sensory experience. The event is free of charge and highly anticipated by the Nicosia community, drawing visitors from across the province of Enna and inland Sicily, cementing its status as one of the most representative Christmas events in the region.
