About Saint Joseph Festival

In Nissoria, a small town in the Province of Enna in the heart of Sicily, the Saint Joseph Festival is the most cherished event of the year. Official patron of the town since 1855, Saint Joseph is celebrated twice: on March 19th with the liturgical feast, the novena, the traditional 'tavulate' banquets, and the distribution of Saint Joseph bread, and most importantly on the first Sunday of August and the following Monday, when the entire community and returning emigrants gather for the procession of the statue, the lyrical-symphonic concert, and the fireworks display that concludes the festivities.

A patronal feast in the heart of inland Sicily

In the small town of Nissoria, in the Province of Enna, the Saint Joseph Festival has for generations been the most anticipated and well-attended moment of the year. Saint Joseph has been the official patron of the town since 1855, when a bishop's decree proclaimed him the protector of Nissoria, replacing Saint Gregory. Since then, devotion to the Saint has never faded, intertwining with the rhythms of rural life and the very identity of the Nissoria community.

Two annual celebrations

The festival is celebrated in two distinct moments. On March 19th, the liturgical day of Saint Joseph, the religious feast takes place, preceded by the novena: in the afternoon, the brass band parades through the town streets, followed by Solemn Holy Mass and the procession of the statue, while families set up the traditional tavulate—elaborate banquet tables that serve as symbols of sharing and devotion—along with the distribution of Saint Joseph bread.

However, the celebration most deeply felt by the community is the summer one, which falls on the first Sunday of August and the following Monday. Historically, this event marked the end of the agricultural season, when families would reunite after the hard work in the fields: even today, it is the occasion when many Nissoria emigrants return to town to reconnect with their roots and loved ones.

The August procession and festivities

On Sunday, after the evening Eucharistic Celebration, the statue of Saint Joseph is carried in procession along the main streets of Nissoria, accompanied by the brass band and numerous devotees. On Monday, the festivities resume at dawn with the 'Dawn Mass', after which the Saint returns in procession, traveling through every single street of the town, welcomed joyfully by the inhabitants.

On Monday afternoon, the second part of the procession takes place, culminating in the traditional lyrical-symphonic concert in honor of Saint Joseph and a spectacular fireworks display that closes the festivities. Alongside the religious events, there is no shortage of musical evenings, children's shows, and entertainment for all ages, making the festival a true community event.

Tradition, identity, and hospitality

The Saint Joseph Festival in Nissoria is much more than a religious anniversary: it is a heritage of popular traditions that tells the soul of a village in inland Sicily, in the Province of Enna. Between the blessed bread, the banquet tables, the band, the procession, and the fireworks, visitors discover the authentic culture of small Sicilian towns, where faith becomes a collective celebration and an occasion for hospitality for those returning home and those arriving from afar.
