The procession reenacting the meeting between the Madonna, Saint Joseph, and Archangel Michael through the streets of Cerami
The Festival of the Encounter is one of the most deeply rooted religious traditions in Cerami, a mountain village in the province of Enna, Sicily, overlooking the Nebrodi range. The event centers on the venerated Byzantine icon of the Madonna della Lavina and features a evocative procession that reenacts the meeting between the Virgin, Saint Joseph, and Archangel Michael.
According to popular tradition, the icon was discovered in the 17th century in the waters of a flooded stream near the ancient Abbey of San Benedetto after a torrential rain. Legend tells of a miracle where a mule, upon reaching the spot where the sacred image lay, suddenly knelt down. The original is kept at the abbey, while a copy is preserved in the Sanctuary of the Lavina. The icon, which underwent extensive restoration in Palermo and Rome, has returned to the heart of the celebrations that the community renews every year.
The heart of the festival is the procession organized by the Archconfraternity of Saint Michael the Archangel, with the participation of other local confraternities. Archangel Michael leads the parade to guide Saint Joseph toward the Madonna: the statues travel through the ancient streets of the town, from the church of Sant'Antonio Abate to the Abbey of San Benedetto, where the Virgin awaits. The highlight is the meeting between the statues, accompanied by ritual bows that recall the ancient greeting offered to the Madonna.
The procession winds through the entire town of Cerami: first the central area, where fireworks delight the faithful along Via Roma, then the climb toward the upper part of the village. The narrow streets of the historic center, the staircases, and the town squares provide the backdrop for an event that blends devotion, folklore, and a sense of belonging.
Originally celebrated in spring and later moved to encourage participation, the Festival of the Encounter is now held on the first Sunday of July. The day, marked by religious rites and the procession, brings the village to life from morning until evening, drawing back emigrants and visitors who return to Cerami to experience one of the community's most defining moments together.
The 2026 Festival of the Encounter takes place in Cerami, in the province of Enna, on Sunday, July 5, in keeping with the tradition that sets the event on the first Sunday of the month. The day begins in the morning, around 10:30 AM, and continues with the procession through the town.
The Archconfraternity of Saint Michael the Archangel, together with other local confraternities, leads the parade of the statues: the Archangel precedes Saint Joseph toward the Madonna, until the moment of the meeting marked by ritual bows. Along Via Roma, fireworks accompany the passage of the statues as the procession reaches the upper part of the town.
Cerami is located in the hinterland of the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Enna. By car, it can be reached from the SS117 road heading toward Nicosia, then following signs for Cerami. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about a two-hour drive away.
The festival takes place in the historic center, which features narrow, uphill streets: it is recommended to park on the outskirts of the village and continue on foot. For the exact times of the procession, it is advisable to check with the parish or the Archconfraternity of Saint Michael the Archangel in the days leading up to the event.
