The second Sunday of August in Cerami: a celebration of faith, drums, and processions
The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival is one of the most significant religious events in Cerami, a small village perched at an altitude of approximately 970 meters. It is the only municipality in the Free Municipal Consortium of Enna that is part of the Nebrodi Park. Every year, on the second Sunday of August, the entire community gathers around the venerated image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel for a festival that weaves together popular faith, tradition, and spectacle.
The festivities are prepared by a novena of prayers, chants, and religious celebrations that mark the days leading up to the main event. The Saturday vigil features one of the most evocative moments: the procession of the Reicola, which carries the relic of Saint Simon Stock, the saint to whom, according to tradition, Our Lady of Mount Carmel appeared. The relic, kept in a silver reliquary and carried under a canopy, travels through the historic part of the village, accompanied by the confraternities and the rhythmic beat of drums that serve as the soundtrack to the entire festival.
The day of the festival is dedicated to the solemn procession of the statue group of the venerated images of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel and Saint Simon Stock. The simulacrum leaves the Church of the Carmine and travels through the main streets of the town: according to tradition, the procession also reaches the church of Saint Sebastian, the patron saint of Cerami, to pay homage to him. The day concludes with an evening procession, the singing of the Ave Maria, and the return of the statue amidst the ringing of bells, the rolling of drums, and the inevitable fireworks that light up the village sky.
Alongside the religious moments, the festival is enriched by numerous recreational events that bring the village to life: the flower festival (infiorata) in Piazza del Carmine, musical evenings, shows, and concerts in the municipal park. The devotion is also reflected in the details of the statue group, with the Our Lady of Mount Carmel figure made of plaster and the Saint Simon Stock figure made of papier-mâché, a testament to Sicilian sacred craftsmanship.
The festival is organized by the Confraternity of the Carmine of Cerami, which has always been the guardian of this tradition and the protagonist of the processions. For the people of Cerami living in Italy and abroad, the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival is also an opportunity to return home and reunite in the heart of the Sicilian summer.
The 2026 Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival in Cerami is scheduled for the second Sunday of August, Sunday, August 9, with the vigil on Saturday, August 8. Traditional events are confirmed: the preparatory novena, the procession of the Reicola with the relic of Saint Simon Stock, and the grand procession of the statue group through the village streets, accompanied by brass bands, drums, and evening fireworks.
The detailed calendar of religious events and entertainment will be published by the Confraternity of the Carmine closer to the festival dates.
The festival takes place on the second Sunday of August, preceded by the novena and the procession of the Reicola on the Saturday vigil.
