The pyrotechnic tradition of Saint Lucy in the San Franco district of Francavilla al Mare
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
On December 13th, the day dedicated to Saint Lucy, the San Franco district of Francavilla al Mare, in the province of Chieti, revives one of the most distinctive popular traditions of the Abruzzo coast: the Ballo della Pupa. This recurrence combines religious devotion to the Syracusan martyr, protector of eyesight, with the pyrotechnic spectacle that concludes the festivities, drawing residents and curious onlookers from across the Chieti coastline every year.
Celebrations begin on the eve of the feast with an official announcement. On the morning of December 13th, thirteen bell tolls mark the start of the day. In the evening, mass is celebrated at the mother church of Santa Maria Maggiore, followed by a procession carrying the effigy of Saint Lucy through the district streets and the laying of a floral tribute at the Saint's feet. Upon the procession's return, the square prepares for the most anticipated moment.
The pupa—also known in Abruzzo as a pupazza or mammoccia—is a large papier-mâché puppet shaped like a woman with a voluptuous figure and vibrant colors, built by layering glued paper over a lightweight frame of reeds and wood. A structure is mounted around the figure to support a series of firecrackers and colored Bengal lights.
The Ballo della Pupa has roots in an ancient agricultural custom linked to fertility rites, once an evocation of the Mother Goddess. The tradition occurs in various locations across Abruzzo on different occasions—from the night of Ferragosto to other patronal feasts—but in Francavilla al Mare, it remains tied specifically to Saint Lucy's Day, when fire and dance transform a religious event into an intensely communal celebration.
Francavilla al Mare is one of the most well-known seaside destinations on the Trabocchi Coast, overlooking the Adriatic just a few kilometers from Pescara and Chieti. The Saint Lucy Festival, with its Ballo della Pupa, represents a key identity-defining event in the town's winter calendar and testifies to the vitality of Abruzzo's pyrotechnic folklore.
