The August 10th feast in the Piane district of Miglianico, blending popular faith with the memory of the statue's discovery.
In the heart of summer, when the countryside of the Chieti region is golden with freshly harvested wheat, the Piane San Pantaleone district of Miglianico (province of Chieti, Abruzzo) renews its patronal feast every August 10th. The center of the celebration is the small church of San Pantaleone alle Piane, located in the Caramanico area, rebuilt in 1982 on an ancient site of worship and consecrated in 2002. Here, you will not find a loud, commercial festival, but one of the most authentic devotional feasts of rural Abruzzo.
The date of August 10th is no coincidence. Tradition tells that after the 1492 Saracen raid that devastated the territory, the wooden statue of San Pantaleone—a sculpture with a distinct Byzantine style—was hidden in a furnace near Caramanico to save it from the invaders' fury. According to tradition, the effigy was rediscovered on August 10th, the feast day of Saint Lawrence. Since then, this date (or the nearest Saturday) commemorates the finding of the patron saint of Miglianico, distinct from the town center's feast in late July and the "Festa della Venuta" on the last Sunday of October.
The most intense moment of the day is the evening procession: from the sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, which overlooks the town of Miglianico, the procession of the faithful sets off toward the chapel of Piane, in the Caramanico district. The route crosses ancient rural localities—Armande, Sucone, the bridge of "lu rise", Stella, Ionne—following a devotional itinerary handed down from generation to generation. "Our steps become prayer": this is the spirit of the feast, where walking alongside the saint matters more than the spectacle.
The cult of San Pantaleone in Miglianico has inspired some of the most famous names in Abruzzese culture. The painter Francesco Paolo Michetti portrayed the procession in his large canvas Il voto (1883), now at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome; and the writer Gabriele d'Annunzio, together with the folklorist Antonio de Nino, frequented these popular manifestations in the Chieti area. Participating in the Piane feast means immersing yourself in a tradition that spanned the great Abruzzese cultural season of the late 19th century.
The feast combines the religious aspect—mass, procession, blessing—with moments of conviviality within the small Piane community. It is a local-scale event, ideal for those seeking the most genuine side of Abruzzo, far from tourist circuits, amidst cultivated hills and the scent of the August countryside.
