About San Cetteo Festival

Every October 10th, Pescara pauses to celebrate Saint Cetteo, the 7th-century bishop and martyr who serves as the patron saint of the city and the Pescara-Penne Diocese. The patronal feast blends solemn religious traditions—such as the pontifical mass at the Cathedral and the traditional procession carrying the saint's effigy through the city center and across the bridges of the Aterno-Pescara river—with a vibrant popular program featuring a fair, evening concerts, performances, and fireworks in Piazza Garibaldi. It is a day of civic celebration and devotion that brings the entire Pescara community together.

The Patronal Feast of Pescara

The San Cetteo Festival is the main patronal feast of the municipality of Pescara, in Abruzzo, celebrated annually on October 10th in honor of the city's protector and the entire Pescara-Penne Diocese. On this day, schools and public offices close, and city life slows down to make way for the religious celebrations and popular festivities that bring the center to life.

Who was Saint Cetteo

According to tradition, Saint Cetteo lived in the 7th century and served as the Bishop of Amiternum. Persecuted during the Lombard invasion, he suffered martyrdom by being thrown into the waters of the Aterno-Pescara river, which, legend says, miraculously returned his body. Venerated as the protector of fishermen and those who live by the sea and river, his relics are kept in the Cathedral of San Cetteo, a building commissioned by Gabriele D'Annunzio and dedicated to the patron saint.

Religious Celebrations

The spiritual heart of the festival is the solemn pontifical mass held in the Cathedral, followed by the procession of the saint's effigy through the main streets of Pescara. The pageant passes through Piazza Garibaldi and reaches the D'Annunzio and Risorgimento bridges, where the Archbishop imparts a blessing upon the river and the city, before returning to the Cathedral via Viale Marconi and Via Conte di Ruvo. On the patronal day, evening masses are suspended in other city churches to encourage attendance at the pontifical.

Popular Festivities

Alongside the religious devotion, the San Cetteo Festival retains a strong character as a city-wide celebration. The program includes a traditional fair with stalls lining the streets of the center, evening concerts and performances, entertainment in the square, and a spectacular grand fireworks finale in Piazza Garibaldi, which lights up the Pescara sky to close the day.

A Tradition of Identity

The patronal feast represents one of the most deeply felt moments of identity for the Pescara community. In recent years, the celebration has returned to its historical autumn date of October 10th, the day of Saint Cetteo's liturgical memory, reaffirming the profound bond between the city, its river, and the saint who protects it.

San Cetteo Festival — edition 2026

The San Cetteo Festival, patron saint of Pescara, will take place as usual on October 10th, the liturgical memorial of the saint bishop and martyr. The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including civil and religious events, fair dates, and Piazza Garibaldi performances, has not yet been announced by the Archdiocese of Pescara-Penne and the organizers.

The 2026 edition of the San Cetteo Festival will be held, according to tradition, around October 10th, the day of the liturgical memorial of the patron saint of Pescara. As of the publication date, the official program — pontifical mass in the Cathedral, procession, fair, and popular events — has not yet been released.
