The San Cetteo Festival is the main patronal feast of the municipality of Pescara, in Abruzzo, celebrated annually on October 10th in honor of the city's protector and the entire Pescara-Penne Diocese. On this day, schools and public offices close, and city life slows down to make way for the religious celebrations and popular festivities that bring the center to life.
According to tradition, Saint Cetteo lived in the 7th century and served as the Bishop of Amiternum. Persecuted during the Lombard invasion, he suffered martyrdom by being thrown into the waters of the Aterno-Pescara river, which, legend says, miraculously returned his body. Venerated as the protector of fishermen and those who live by the sea and river, his relics are kept in the Cathedral of San Cetteo, a building commissioned by Gabriele D'Annunzio and dedicated to the patron saint.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the solemn pontifical mass held in the Cathedral, followed by the procession of the saint's effigy through the main streets of Pescara. The pageant passes through Piazza Garibaldi and reaches the D'Annunzio and Risorgimento bridges, where the Archbishop imparts a blessing upon the river and the city, before returning to the Cathedral via Viale Marconi and Via Conte di Ruvo. On the patronal day, evening masses are suspended in other city churches to encourage attendance at the pontifical.
Alongside the religious devotion, the San Cetteo Festival retains a strong character as a city-wide celebration. The program includes a traditional fair with stalls lining the streets of the center, evening concerts and performances, entertainment in the square, and a spectacular grand fireworks finale in Piazza Garibaldi, which lights up the Pescara sky to close the day.
The patronal feast represents one of the most deeply felt moments of identity for the Pescara community. In recent years, the celebration has returned to its historical autumn date of October 10th, the day of Saint Cetteo's liturgical memory, reaffirming the profound bond between the city, its river, and the saint who protects it.
The 2026 edition of the San Cetteo Festival will be held, according to tradition, around October 10th, the day of the liturgical memorial of the patron saint of Pescara. As of the publication date, the official program — pontifical mass in the Cathedral, procession, fair, and popular events — has not yet been released. This page will be updated as soon as the Archdiocese of Pescara-Penne and the Municipality announce the calendar of festivities.
The celebrations take place at the Cathedral of San Cetteo and along the streets of Pescara's city center, with the grand finale in Piazza Garibaldi.
Pescara is well-connected: Pescara Centrale station is in the heart of the city, just a few minutes' walk from the Cathedral. By car, take the Pescara exit from the A14 or A25 motorways. The Abruzzo Airport is located just a few kilometers from the center.
The patronal feast is celebrated on October 10th, with civil and religious events taking place in the days leading up to it.
