The patronal feast of Francavilla al Mare, blending faith, music, and spectacular fireworks over the sea
The San Franco Festival is the most cherished summer event in Francavilla al Mare, an elegant seaside town in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Each year, around August 18th, the community pays homage to its patron saint, San Franco da Assergi, with a celebration that unites religious tradition with popular festivities, attracting worshippers, vacationers, and visitors along the entire Adriatic coast.
San Franco was a monk and hermit who lived between the 12th and 13th centuries, hailing from the L'Aquila area. After entering the Benedictine monastery of San Giovanni in Collimento at a very young age, he chose the life of a hermit, retreating into the woods of Lucoli and the mountains of the Gran Sasso. His legacy as a penitent and miracle worker is deeply rooted in Abruzzese devotion, and in Francavilla al Mare, his protection is celebrated as the city's spiritual patronage.
The spiritual heart of the festival is August 18th, which begins with a solemn Holy Mass in the church dedicated to the saint. This is followed by the traditional procession through the streets of the historic center, with the statue of San Franco accompanied by confraternities, clergy, civil authorities, and a crowd of the faithful. The streets are adorned with artistic illuminations, and the passing of the procession marks one of the most significant identity-defining moments for the local community.
Alongside the sacred rites, the festival offers a rich entertainment program. City squares, particularly Piazza Stazione and Piazza Benedetto Croce, host free concerts, live musical performances, and DJ sets that bring the White Night to life. However, the most anticipated moment remains the Grandi Fuochi di San Franco: on the evening of August 18th, the sky over the Adriatic lights up with an extraordinary pyrotechnic show launched from the sea, visible from the pier, Piazza Adriatico, and Via Tosti, drawing thousands of spectators to the promenade.
During the festivities, the streets are filled with food stalls where you can savor traditional local dishes: from the essential arrosticini to pallotte cace e ove, and local desserts. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the authentic atmosphere of an Abruzzese seaside village in the peak of summer, amidst faith, conviviality, and spectacle.
The 2026 San Franco Festival in Francavilla al Mare will be held on August 17th and 18th, as part of the rich municipal summer program titled "PsichedelichEstate 2026", which features over 177 events throughout the city.
The highlight of the musical program is the free concert by The Kolors, taking place on August 17th in Piazza Stazione, in the heart of the patronal festivities. On the evening of August 18th, the day of San Franco, after the solemn Holy Mass and the traditional procession, the city will host a white night with music and entertainment until late, culminating in the traditional Grandi Fuochi di San Franco, the pyrotechnic show launched from the sea that brings the festival to a spectacular close.
Francavilla al Mare is located along the Adriatic coast in the province of Chieti, just a few kilometers from Pescara. By car, it is accessible via the A14 motorway (Pescara Sud-Francavilla exit). The Francavilla al Mare railway station is on the Bologna-Bari-Lecce Adriatic line.
The festivities are concentrated around August 18th, the feast day of the patron saint, San Franco.
For the fireworks display over the sea, it is advisable to reach the promenade, the pier, or Piazza Adriatico in good time. During the festival, night buses are provided and traffic modifications are implemented; bans on the sale of beverages in glass containers and alcohol are in effect. Admission to concerts and shows is free.
