The districts of Miglianico compete throughout the month of July
Every summer, throughout most of July, the historic center of Miglianico—a small town in the province of Chieti nestled in the Foro river valley—transforms into the stage for a long and heartfelt popular competition: the Contrade Games. The event, organized by the Miglianico Pro Loco, pits the town's districts and neighborhoods against each other in a series of traditional trials and games that span several weeks, rekindling a sense of belonging and healthy rivalry among the quarters.
The charm of the Contrade Games lies in their duration: not just a single day, but a true summer tournament that accompanies the town throughout the month of July. Teams from the various districts face off in traditional Abruzzo folk games, showcasing strength, dexterity, ingenuity, and above all, team spirit. The evenings become a gathering point for families, the youth, and the elderly, in a festive atmosphere that unites the entire Miglianico community.
The Contrade Games serve as the natural prelude to the Contrade del Piacere, the major food and wine festival held in the first days of August in Piazza Umberto I and the historic center. While in July the districts compete in games, in August the same districts showcase the best of local culinary tradition, with dozens of zero-kilometer specialties prepared according to the recipes of the town's grandmothers and mothers. The common thread remains the same: celebrating the districts as the beating heart of Miglianico's identity.
Miglianico is an ancient village nestled in the Abruzzo hills, known for the cult of Saint Pantaleon, the town's patron saint, celebrated in the local sanctuary and made famous by the writings of Gabriele D'Annunzio and the paintings of Francesco Paolo Michetti. In this context of history and devotion, the Contrade Games represent the most playful and popular side of the Miglianico summer, an event capable of renewing the bond between the inhabitants and their roots every year.
Open to participants of all ages, the Contrade Games are one of the most anticipated occasions of the summer in Miglianico. The event is free, participatory, and takes place in the heart of the town, attracting residents from different neighborhoods and visitors from the Foro valley, helping to keep alive a tradition built on play, conviviality, and belonging.
For the summer of 2026, the Contrade Games return to Miglianico with a calendar running from July 1st to 24th, confirming the formula of a long summer tournament between the town's neighborhoods. The event, organized by the Pro Loco, is part of a rich program of events that also includes the patron saint feasts at the end of July and the 'Contrade del Piacere' in early August.
The detailed program of individual trials and evening events is released by the Miglianico Pro Loco throughout the month: it is recommended to follow the official channels to find out the exact dates of the games between the districts.
