About Sant'Andrea Festival

Every last Sunday of July, the Pescara maritime community pays tribute to its patron saint with the Sant'Andrea Festival, one of the most heartfelt seafaring traditions in Abruzzo. Established in 1867 in the Borgo Marino district, the celebration combines a solemn mass, a picturesque sea procession on festively decorated fishing boats, and the casting of laurel wreaths to honor those lost at sea. Midnight fireworks, concerts, market stalls, and food stands along the promenade round out a weekend that weaves together popular devotion and local identity.

A festival born from the sea

The Sant'Andrea Festival is the celebration through which the Pescara maritime community, in the heart of Abruzzo, honors its patron saint, Saint Andrew the Apostle, patron of fishermen. Its roots date back to 1867, the year the church dedicated to the saint was built in Borgo Marino, the district that grew around the port and the mouth of the Pescara River, inhabited by families who lived off the sea and fishing. For over a century and a half, every last Sunday of July, this community has renewed a deep bond between Catholic faith and maritime heritage.

The sea procession

The most evocative moment is the sea procession. After the morning mass celebrated in the church of Sant'Andrea, the statue of the saint leaves the parish and is carried in a procession to the Porto Canale, where it awaits a fleet of festively decorated fishing boats. One of the vessels is chosen as the flagship and receives the honor of carrying the statue out to sea, accompanied by religious and civil authorities. The procession heads offshore along the coast as far as Montesilvano, where laurel wreaths and flowers are cast into the water to remember those lost at seaโ€”the fishermen who never returned.

The civil program

Alongside the religious program, which marks the days leading up to the festival with prayer vigils, rosaries, and Eucharistic celebrations, there is a rich calendar of popular events. The weekend is enlivened by:

  • Fireworks to open the day and the spectacular midnight fireworks display from the beach, near the pier;
  • Evening concerts and musical shows along the promenade;
  • Market stalls, rides, and light arches along the promenade and the northern riverfront;
  • Food stands serving typical Pescara seafood dishes, from fish soup to fried fish.

Between devotion and city identity

The Sant'Andrea Festival is not just a religious appointment: it is a moment of strong identity for the city of Pescara and the entire municipality, an Adriatic capital that rediscovers its origins as a fishing village here. In recent years, the event has also become an opportunity for the local maritime community to draw attention to the difficulties of the fishing sector and the critical issues of the port. Experiencing the festival means immersing oneself in an ancient rite where the blessing of the sea, the sound of fishing boat sirens, and the light of the fireworks merge into a single, authentic popular emotion.

Sant'Andrea Festival โ€” edition 2026

The dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition of the Sant'Andrea Festival in Pescara have not yet been officially announced. Following the tradition established in 1867, the festival is expected to take place around the last Sunday of July, featuring the solemn mass, the sea procession on fishing boats, the casting of wreaths in memory of those lost at sea, and fireworks along the Borgo Marino promenade.

The 2026 edition of the Sant'Andrea Festival in Pescara is expected, as every year, around the last Sunday of July. At the moment, the parish of Sant'Andrea and the maritime community have not yet released the official program with the definitive dates and the calendar of civil and religious events. The times for the solemn mass, the sea procession with the flagship, and the evening fireworks display are yet to be confirmed. This page will be updated as soon as the committee announces the detailed program of the festivities.
