The nocturnal candlelight procession and fireworks at the Aragonese Castle
The San Rocco Fireworks are one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Ortona, a coastal town in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Every August 16th, the community gathers around the figure of Saint Roch, a protector invoked against epidemics and deeply rooted in the popular devotion of Southern Italy. The anniversary combines religious observance with festive celebration, culminating in the evening with the famous fireworks display launched from the Aragonese Castle, the 15th-century fortress perched above the Adriatic that serves as the city's symbol.
The most evocative moment of the festival is the ancient nocturnal procession on August 16th, which begins in the evening (traditionally at 9:00 PM). Over three hundred candles carried by the faithful illuminate the main streets of the historic center, creating a river of light that accompanies the statue of the saint. It is a tradition that has been revived in recent years after a period of interruption, returning to be one of the most deeply felt identity rituals for the Ortona community.
The day of Saint Roch is marked from the early hours by religious celebrations. The Church of San Rocco hosts morning masses, at the end of which the traditional San Rocco Bread is distributed to the faithful. In the preceding days, a novena takes place at the Church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli. On August 16th, the Banda Città di Ortona enlivens the center with a parade and a concert at Piazza Porta Caldari, adding a live soundtrack to a day of celebration that involves both residents and visitors.
The grand finale is the fireworks display that gives the festival its name. The fireworks are launched from the Aragonese Castle in a unique scenic setting: the lights reflect on the Adriatic and are visible from the Orientale promenade and the entire seafront. In the days leading up to August 16th, the castle courtyard also hosts evening shows and events that lead the community toward the climax of the festival.
The San Rocco Fireworks are part of the Estate Ortonese (Ortona Summer) program, a series of events organized by the Municipality of Ortona that offers dozens of activities including music, culture, sports, and traditions from July to September, enlivening the city center and the surrounding districts. For visitors, the festival is the ideal opportunity to discover one of the pearls of the Trabocchi Coast, between the heritage of the castle, the historic center, and the Abruzzo beaches in the height of the summer season.
On August 16, 2026, Ortona renews the appointment with the San Rocco Fireworks, included in the official program of the 2026 Ortona Summer, the municipal festival featuring over 80 events from July to September. The day follows the usual festival schedule: in the morning, masses at the Church of San Rocco with the distribution of San Rocco Bread, the parade and concert by the Banda Città di Ortona at Piazza Porta Caldari; in the evening, the ancient nocturnal procession with over three hundred candles along the streets of the center and, as a grand finale, the fireworks display from the Aragonese Castle. Detailed program times for 2026 will be released by the municipal administration in the days leading up to the event.
By car: A14 motorway, exit Ortona/Val di Sangro, then follow signs for the center. By train: Ortona station on the Bologna-Bari Adriatic line. The city is also well connected to Pescara and its airport (about 30 km away).
The nocturnal procession and fireworks take place on August 16th in the historic center and at the Aragonese Castle. Participation is free and open to all. In mid-August, it is recommended to book hotels and accommodations along the coast in advance.
