The patronal feast of Sambuceto in honor of Saint Roch
The San Rocco Patronal Feast is the most important religious and popular celebration in Sambuceto, the most populous district of the Municipality of San Giovanni Teatino, in the province of Chieti, in the heart of the Chieti-Pescara metropolitan area in Abruzzo. Every summer, around August 16th — the day the Church commemorates Saint Roch — the community gathers around its patron saint for a long week of celebrations that combine faith, tradition, and entertainment.
Saint Roch, a pilgrim and miracle worker venerated as a protector against epidemics, is the patron saint of Sambuceto. His feast is rooted in the popular devotion of the district, which throughout the days also celebrates other figures dear to the community alongside the patron, such as Our Lady of Hope, Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, and Saint Anthony of Padua. The heart of the festivities remains the procession with the statue of Saint Roch through the streets of the town, accompanied by the band and followed by the traditional distribution of blessed bread.
The festival alternates moments of prayer and solemn celebrations with a rich entertainment program. The evenings in Piazza San Rocco host concerts, ballroom dance orchestras, musical shows, and dance nights, while the streets of the district come alive with stalls, a funfair, and food stands. Among the most anticipated moments of the Sambuceto tradition is the Ballo della Pupa (Dance of the Puppet), which precedes the final fireworks display, an authentic farewell from the community to its saint.
More than just a village festival, the San Rocco celebration is a moment of strong identity for Sambuceto and the entire Municipality of San Giovanni Teatino. It is the occasion when the district rediscovers its roots, families reunite, and the younger generation experiences traditions passed down through generations. Organized with dedication by the San Rocco Feast Committee and the parish, the event represents one of the most characteristic summer appointments in the Teatino side of Abruzzo.
The San Rocco Patronal Feast returns to Sambuceto (San Giovanni Teatino, CH) on August 16, 2026, the day the district's patron saint is celebrated. The community is preparing to experience the traditional procession with the statue of Saint Roch, the distribution of blessed bread, and the festive evenings in Piazza San Rocco.
The complete calendar of secular festivities — concerts, dance nights, the Ballo della Pupa, and the final fireworks display — will be announced by the San Rocco Feast Committee and the parish in the weeks preceding the feast.
Sambuceto is the main district of San Giovanni Teatino (CH), a few kilometers from Pescara and Chieti. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Pescara-Ovest/Chieti exit) or the A25; the Abruzzo airport is just a few minutes away. The reference railway station is San Giovanni Teatino-Dragonara, on the Pescara-Rome line.
Celebrations and shows in Piazza San Rocco are free to attend. The highlight is August 16th, the liturgical feast of the patron; secular festivities are concentrated in the summer evenings.
