The patronal feast and the ancient district palio in the hilltop village of Guardistallo
In the heart of the Val di Cecina, perched on the hills that slope down toward the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Tuscan Archipelago, the village of Guardistallo celebrates its patron saint every year with the Saint Lawrence Festival. It is one of the most cherished events in the summer calendar of this small municipality in the Province of Pisa, a town with ancient origins whose bohemian past and elegant alleys, rebuilt after the 19th-century earthquake, have earned it the nickname of the little Paris.
The most anticipated moment of the festival is the Palio dell'acqua in Carretta, also known as the Saint Lawrence Palio: a unique folkloric re-enactment that reflects the history and identity of the village. Eight districts, each represented by two local youths, face off in pairs in the Piazza della Chiesa. The challenge involves pushing a cart loaded with a cauldron full of water along the course: the competitors, locked in a brotherly embrace, must reach the finish line without losing the water, which is essential to extinguish the sacred brazier placed at the goal. The winning team earns the gridironโthe symbol of Saint Lawrence's martyrdomโand the cencio del Santo (the saint's banner).
The entire event takes place in historical costume, with performances by flag-wavers and a parade by the Guardistallo Historical Group, which brings the atmosphere of bygone days back to the streets of the town center. The re-enactment combines district competition, spectacle, and popular devotion in a setting that involves the entire community and welcomes the many visitors who climb up to the village during these August evenings.
The religious feast kicks off the celebrations: on the evening of August 9th, a procession winds through the streets of the town with the sacred images of Saint Lawrence and Saint Agatha, to whom the parish church of Guardistallo is dedicated. It is a moment of reflection that precedes the secular festivities and the palio, linking the event to the village's deep Catholic tradition.
Participating in the Saint Lawrence Festival means discovering one of the most authentic corners of the less-touristy Tuscany: a hilltop village surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, with views that stretch all the way to the sea. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Guardistallo and represents an ideal opportunity to experience the Tuscan summer away from the most crowded destinations, amidst folklore, gastronomy, and local hospitality.
