A summer of classical music, opera, tango, and the arts in the villages and castles of the Val di Cecina
The Art & Music Festival in Val di Cecina is one of the richest and longest-running cultural events in the Pisan hinterland. Organized by the Accademia Libera Natura e Cultura (Marco Polo Association), the festival takes place every year from early June to mid-September, embracing a territory of medieval villages, castles, and geothermal landscapes, with the Municipality of Montecatini Val di Cecina (Province of Pisa, Tuscany) serving as one of its beating hearts.
The format is that of a "widespread festival": events are not concentrated in a single location but travel throughout the entire valley, from the halls of the Castello Ginori di Querceto to the refined settings of Borgo Pignano, and into the squares and courtyards of Montecatini Val di Cecina. It is a way to discover, concert after concert, a corner of Tuscany still far from the major tourist flows.
The festival brings together several thematic series that alternate throughout the summer:
The most anticipated moment is the Querceto International Piano Festival, which brings internationally renowned pianists and orchestras to the Val di Cecina. Alongside evening concerts, masterclasses in piano, flute, and chamber music are held, turning the village of Querceto into a small musical campus attended by young talents from all over the world. The festival traditionally closes with the winners' concerts, a showcase for the best students selected during the event.
The programming ranges effortlessly from the great classical repertoire โ Beethoven, Chopin, Bach, Mozart โ to the passions of Argentine tango at the Festival Vol'Tango, with international artists, shows, and dance evenings open to the public. There are also appointments with opera and world music, in a continuous dialogue between the historical-artistic heritage of the locations and contemporary languages.
More than just a concert season, the Art & Music Festival is an invitation to experience the Val di Cecina in a slow, cultural way: listening to a piano recital on a castle terrace, enjoying a tango evening in a historic village, or attending a baroque concert within the walls of Borgo Pignano means combining great music with the beauty of the Tuscan landscape. It is an experience that reveals another side of Tuscany, that of the small towns in the Pisan hinterland.
The 2026 edition of the Art & Music Festival in Val di Cecina, organized by the Accademia Libera Natura e Cultura, runs from June 7th to September 13th, focusing on great classical music, opera, Argentine tango, and world music. Events take place at the Castello Ginori di Querceto, Borgo Pignano, and the center of Montecatini Val di Cecina (Province of Pisa).
The focal point is the Querceto International Piano Festival (July 22-31), featuring concerts, recitals, and international masterclasses, while from August 9th to 14th, the valley comes alive with the Festival Vol'Tango, dedicated to Argentine tango.
The piano section is the heart of the 2026 edition, with the Klassische Philharmonie Nord-West performing in three evenings across Montecatini Val di Cecina, Borgo Pignano, and Castello Ginori di Querceto, featuring music by Beethoven, Chopin, Bach, Mozart, and Britten, and pianists Sara Cianciullo, Daniel Gironacci, and Vittoria Russo.
Piano, flute, and chamber music masterclasses are held in Querceto from July 18th to August 1st.
A week dedicated to Argentine tango at the Castello Ginori di Querceto and Montecatini Val di Cecina, with concerts, shows, and milongas.
Events take place in various locations across the Val di Cecina (Province of Pisa): Castello Ginori di Querceto and Ponteginori, Borgo Pignano, and the center of Montecatini Val di Cecina (Piazza Garibaldi and other town venues).
By car: from the SS1 Aurelia or the SGC Florence-Pisa-Livorno, take the exit for Val di Cecina, then follow provincial roads towards Montecatini Val di Cecina and Querceto. By train: reference stations on the coastal line (Cecina), then continue by car towards the hinterland. A car is recommended to easily reach the various villages and castles.
Some events are free, while others require a ticket (Festival Vol'Tango shows start from approximately 20-25 euros).
