The great bonfire, the mattre, and the procession in Monteiasi
In the heart of the province of Taranto, the small town of Monteiasi celebrates one of its most defining traditions every March: the Saint Joseph's Festival, known to all as the Foc'ra. At the center of the festivities is the great bonfire lit in Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII, a fire ritual rooted in the rural and devotional culture of the Taranto Salento, which literally illuminates the town in honor of the patriarch of the Holy Family.
The festival combines two elements typical of the Puglian devotion to Saint Joseph. On one hand, the foc'ra, an imposing pile of wood collected door-to-door along the town's streets and then set ablaze amidst fireworks. On the other, the mattre: the ancient wooden troughs once used for kneading bread, set up along the streets and filled with provisions. Historically, they served to feed the poor and pilgrims arriving from other towns, and even today, they are blessed during the solemn procession on the main day. There are about fifteen mattre that can be admired along the streets of Monteiasi.
The festival is coordinated by the Mother Church parish together with the Saint Joseph Festival Committee, and marks the town's calendar with torchlight processions, medieval musicians in costume, marching bands, and evening fireworks. For decades, this has been accompanied by "Bonfires and Colors", an initiative born in 1974 with the Gruppo Anonimo 74, which pairs the fire with a moment of collective creativity: drawings, paintings, poems, and thoughts created by children and citizens of all ages, without competition or prizes, simply to strengthen the sense of belonging to the community.
The value of the Monteiasi Foc'ra goes beyond the municipal borders. Puglia is the only Italian region to have adopted comprehensive legislation to protect fire rituals (Regional Law no. 1 of 2018 and Regulation no. 8 of 2019), with a specific regional register accessible to events that document multi-decadal continuity. The Monteiasi bonfire is fully recognized as one of these great devotional fires that animate Puglian villages between March and the following months.
The popular traditions of Monteiasi preserve traces of a layered history: between the 15th and 16th centuries, the town welcomed groups of Albanian refugees (Arbëreshë) fleeing the Ottoman advance in the Balkans, a presence that contributed to demographic development and left marks on local surnames and customs. The Saint Joseph's Festival, with its bonfire and mattre, is today the moment when this collective memory is renewed, drawing families, young people, and visitors from neighboring towns in the province of Taranto to the square.
In 2026, the Saint Joseph's Festival in Monteiasi was celebrated between March 20 and 22, with a slight delay from the traditional date of March 19 due to bad weather. Three days marked by fire rituals, music from marching bands, and popular devotion, culminating in the solemn procession and the blessing of the ancient mattre displayed along the town's streets.
The heart of the festival is Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII, where the bonfire is lit, while the procession and the blessing of the mattre wind through the historic center of Monteiasi (province of Taranto, Puglia).
By car: Monteiasi can be reached via the SS7 and the provincial network connecting Taranto (about 15 km away) and Grottaglie. By train: the most convenient station is Taranto, on the Adriatic line and the route to Bari, from where you can continue by bus to the town.
Participation in religious rites, the bonfire, and fireworks displays is free and outdoors. It is advisable to arrive early on the evening of the bonfire lighting and on the day of the procession, when the town center is most crowded. Given the season, we recommend clothing suitable for the still-cool March evenings.
