The Patronal Feast of Saint Cajetan of Thiene is the most anticipated event of the year for Lizzano, a town in the Province of Taranto, in the heart of the western Salento region of Puglia. Saint Cajetan is the town's primary patron, and every year in early August, the community unites in a blend of religious devotion and popular celebration that involves the entire town.
The festivities span several days, with a packed liturgical calendar centered at the Mother Church of San Nicola, culminating in the solemnity of August 7th, the day dedicated to the saint. The streets of the center are adorned with the famous Apulian luminarie (light displays), while the squares host brass band concerts, performances, and stalls, creating the unique atmosphere that characterizes patronal feasts in Southern Italy.
The religious program marks the entire week with thematic celebrations dedicated to different community groups: youth and altar servers, catechists and educators, and the sick with the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The most solemn moment arrives on the eve of the feast, when the symbolic gesture of handing over the city keys to the patron saint takes place during the Eucharistic concelebration, followed by the grand procession through the town streets with the statue of Saint Cajetan, accompanied by the clergy, confraternities, and local authorities.
Who was Saint Cajetan of Thiene? A priest from Vicenza who lived between the 15th and 16th centuries and founder of the Order of Theatine Clerics, he is venerated as the protector of Providence and labor. His liturgical feast falls on August 7th, the date around which all the Lizzano celebrations revolve.
Alongside the spiritual dimension, the feast offers the joyful face of Apulian popular tradition. The evenings are enlivened by brass band concerts—in recent years featuring the 'Città di Rutigliano' Band and the 'Città di Castellana Grotte' Band—performing lyrical-symphonic repertoires under the lights. The grand finale is the pyromusical show, which illuminates the Lizzano sky on the night of the solemnity, officially closing the festivities before thousands of spectators.
A celebration that unites the entire Salento community and attracts visitors from neighboring towns in the Province of Taranto, offering an authentic immersion into the religious and popular traditions of Puglia.
The calendar and program for the 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Cajetan in Lizzano have not yet been released. As per tradition, the festivities are expected to take place in the first days of August around the solemnity of August 7th, with liturgical celebrations at the Mother Church of San Nicola, the procession of the saint, brass band concerts under the lights, and the traditional final pyromusical show.
