The grand summer festival of Montemesola in honor of its Patron Saint
Every year, at the end of August, the small town of Montemesola, in the province of Taranto, gathers around its Patron Saint for the Feast of the Patronage of the Blessed Virgin of the Most Holy Rosary. This is not just a religious anniversary: it is a moment when collective memory, popular devotion, handed-down traditions, and a sense of belonging merge into a single shared heritage. The summer festival is designed primarily to allow emigrant Montemesola natives—the children of the town who live far away and return for the summer—to reunite in their village and participate in the festivities in honor of the Madonna del Rosario.
In Montemesola, devotion to the Virgin of the Rosary is expressed through two distinct and complementary events. The summer Feast of the Patronage, celebrated at the end of August, anticipates and prepares for the liturgical patronal feast on October 7th, the memorial of the Madonna del Rosario. Moving the major festivities to August responds to the need to reunite the community during the period when emigrants return, without replacing the liturgical calendar that culminates in the autumn. The statue of the Madonna kept in the Mother Church represents, as they say in town, the face of an entire people.
The program spans several days and alternates moments of intense spirituality with performances eagerly awaited by the entire citizenry:
The historical, anthropological, religious, and social value of this tradition has received official recognition: with Executive Determination no. 323 of November 25, 2025, the Feast of the Patronage of the Blessed Virgin of the Most Holy Rosary was included in the Inventory of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Puglia. The candidacy was promoted by the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary, which, together with the Municipality of Montemesola, manages the organization of the festivities. A milestone that consecrates a festival capable of holding together faith, identity, and community, and which represents one of the most heartfelt events of the summer in the Taranto hinterland.
The Feast of the Patronage of the Blessed Virgin of the Most Holy Rosary returns to Montemesola on August 22 and 23, 2026. This is the first edition following the official recognition of the festival as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Puglia, obtained at the end of 2025. As per tradition, the festivities are expected to include religious rites—the translation of the statues, Eucharistic celebrations, the procession, and the ceremony of the keys to the city—alongside spectacular events such as the Dancing Fountains in Largo Osanna, illuminations, brass bands, and fireworks. The official program with times and guests will be released by the organizers in the weeks prior.
The Feast of the Patronage takes place at the end of August. In 2026, the celebrations are scheduled for August 22 and 23; the liturgical memorial of the Patron Saint is celebrated on October 7.
