The patronal feast of Leporano, protector against earthquakes
The Sant'Emidio Patronal Feast is the most significant religious and civic celebration in Leporano, a small town overlooking the Ionian Sea in the province of Taranto, in the heart of Apulia. Every year, in early August, the town gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together devotion, folk tradition, and joy, transforming Piazza Immacolata and the streets of the center into a stage of lights, sounds, and colors.
Sant'Emidio, bishop and martyr, is venerated in Leporano as the patron saint and protector against earthquakes, a devotion deeply rooted in the community's memory. In 2025, the feast took on special significance: the centenary of the patronage was celebrated with the opening of a special jubilee year presided over by the archbishop. The bond between the town and its saint is so profound that, during the celebrations, the mayor symbolically hands the keys of the city to the patron saint.
The program traditionally spans three main days, August 3rd, 4th, and 5th, with the addition of August 12th for the feast of the patronage. The celebrations alternate between religious moments and public events:
The Sant'Emidio Feast is organized by the Sant'Emidio Festival Committee, which manages the illuminations, decorations, bandstand, and civic program each year. It is a gathering point for the entire community and the many vacationers who populate the marinas of Leporano in summer: a moment when the ancient village, traditions, and seaside life of the Ionian coast merge into a single collective celebration, an authentic testament to the religious and folk culture of Apulia.
The Municipality of Leporano has officially confirmed the dates for the Sant'Emidio Patronal Feast 2026, scheduled for August 3, 4, 5, and 12, 2026, as stated in the public notice for the occupation of public space published on the municipal website.
Following the established structure of previous editions, the festivities include holy masses, the solemn procession of the patron saint through the streets of the center, brass band concerts in the square, and the fireworks display that accompanies the return of the procession. The feast of the patronage of Sant'Emidio is celebrated on August 12th.
The complete program, including artist names and schedules, will be released by the Sant'Emidio Festival Committee in the weeks preceding the feast.
