The second most cherished festival in Monteiasi, blending centuries-old faith with local joy

The Our Lady of the Rosary Festival is the second most important annual event for the town of Monteiasi, in the province of Taranto (Apulia), following the patron saint's feast. The cult of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary dates back to the late 16th century, with a local confraternity officially established in 1618 via a foundation bull from Rome. This devotion was sparked by a holy mission preached in 1616 by Jesuit fathers Giulio Pignatari and Gabriele Mastrilli, who gifted a Crucifix to the town and fostered the locals' deep love for the Virgin of the Rosary.
The festival traditionally falls on the second Sunday of October and spans several days. It begins with the transfer of the statue of the Madonna from the Confraternity's oratory to the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the parish church built in 1615 on land donated by Baron Pompeo Antoglietta. This is followed by the preached triduum, a period of spiritual preparation leading up to the main Sunday celebration.
The heart of the festival is the solemn procession of the statue of the Virgin of the Rosary, which winds through the historic center of Monteiasi on Sunday afternoon, accompanied by confraternities, the faithful, and local authorities. The procession typically concludes in Piazza Maria Immacolata, where an open-air solemn mass is held. Both the liturgical and civil aspects are accompanied by the local musical association's wind orchestra, in keeping with the finest Apulian band traditions.
Beyond its religious significance, the event embodies the spirit of a classic Southern Italian village festival: the streets are lit up with artistic illuminations, accompanied by fireworks and evening concerts and musical performances in the square that keep the community entertained until late at night. It is a time when the entire town, including those who have moved away, reunites to renew their strong sense of identity.
More than just an event, the Our Lady of the Rosary Festival is a cornerstone of Monteiasi's collective identity. Organized by the Parish of San Giovanni Battista and the Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament and Rosary, the festival revives a four-hundred-year-old tradition that seamlessly blends faith, heritage, and community spirit in one of the most intimate villages of the Ionian province.
At present, the Parish of San Giovanni Battista and the Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament and Rosary have not yet released the official calendar for the 2026 edition. In line with Monteiasi tradition, the Our Lady of the Rosary Festival is expected to take place around the second Sunday of October and follow the usual format: removal and enthronement of the statue in the preceding days, a preached triduum of preparation, a solemn procession on the afternoon of the main Sunday, and civil festivities with a band, illuminations, fireworks, and concerts in the square. This page will be updated with dates and the program as soon as they are made public.
Celebrations are centered around the Church of San Giovanni Battista and the streets of Monteiasi's historic center (province of Taranto), with the solemn open-air mass held in Piazza Maria Immacolata.
Monteiasi is located a few kilometers from Taranto, along the road toward Grottaglie. By car, it is accessible via the SS7 highway and provincial roads connecting the Ionian area. The nearest train station is in Taranto, from where you can continue by car or local transport links.
Participation in the procession, religious services, and public square performances is free and open to everyone.
Exact dates, triduum details, and evening program schedules are usually announced by the parish and the Confraternity in the weeks leading up to the festival. It is recommended to check parish notices and local social media pages for updates.
