In the heart of the Municipality of Pulsano, in the province of Taranto, the Patronal Feast of the Madonna dei Martiri and Saint Tryphon is much more than a religious observance: it is the moment when the entire community reunites between the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. Those who have left the town for work return during these days, and the streets of the historic center fill with families, market stalls, and the scent of cotton candy and the typical cupeta. It is one of the most cherished patronal feasts in this corner of the Taranto Salento.
The cult of the Madonna dei Martiri has its roots in the defense of Otranto in 1480: a group of young men from Pulsano, led by Giovanni Antonio De Falconibus, died fighting against the Turkish siege alongside the Salento city, whose inhabitants were massacred and later proclaimed saints by Pope Francis in 2013. In memory of that sacrifice, the veneration of the Queen of Martyrs was born in Pulsano. The cult of Saint Tryphon, a martyr originally from Lampsacus in Phrygia, spread during the nineteenth century: tradition links his intercession to the end of a terrible epidemic that struck the town between 1810 and 1812.
The most symbolic moment of the festival is the handing over of the city keys: the mayor solemnly entrusts the keys of Pulsano to the patron saints, asking for their protection for the coming year. The following day, the two effigies are carried in procession along the town streets, accompanied by the festive marches of the band and the participation of civil and religious authorities. The solemn Eucharistic celebration, often presided over by a bishop, concludes the liturgical part of the festivities.
Alongside the religious dimension runs the civil one, concentrated primarily in Piazza Castello. Here, the bandstand is set up for brass band concerts; musical groups and Apulian bands arrive, the grand municipal band performs, and the evening culminates with a fireworks display. The artistic illuminations, set up along Via Costantinopoli and the streets of the center, transform the town into a light-filled setting that recalls the best tradition of Southern patronal feasts.
There is no shortage of food stalls featuring specialties of Apulian cuisine, local craft markets, and stands selling traditional sweets. It is an opportunity to savor the hospitality of Pulsano and experience the warmth of an authentic village festival, where folk tradition and devotion coexist.
The Patronal Feast of Pulsano is celebrated every year in the first days of September, with the festivities culminating between the 7th and 8th of the month. A fixed appointment on the city calendar, capable of uniting the entire Province of Taranto around its two patrons.
