The Patronal Festival of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Our Lady of the Fountain is the defining event of Villa Castelli, a small town in the Province of Brindisi nestled on the border with the Taranto area, in the heart of Puglia. Every year, in the first days of October, the town dresses up to honor its two patrons: the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Most Holy Virgin of the Fountain, figures around whom the religious and civic life of the community has revolved for generations.

It is one of those Southern patronal festivals where the sacred and the profane coexist naturally: on one hand, the solemnity of liturgical celebrations; on the other, the explosion of colors from the luminarie (artistic light displays), the scent of the fair, the sound of brass bands, and the draw of evening concerts. For three days, the streets of the center fill with stalls, people, and music, and Piazza Municipio transforms into the beating heart of the festivities.

Popular faith and traditional rites

The religious core of the festival is the solemn procession of the patron saints' statues, which winds through the town's main streets accompanied by the band and the faithful. A particularly poignant moment is the symbolic handing over of the city keys in Piazza Municipio, a gesture by which the administration entrusts Villa Castelli to the protection of its patrons.

The festivities are preceded by days of spiritual preparation, with evening Eucharistic celebrations at the Mother Church led by various diocesan priests. On the solemn day, several masses are held, including the pontifical mass presided over by the Bishop and, at the end, a thanksgiving mass. The commemoration of the Transitus of Saint Francis of Assisi, which falls during these days, is also observed.

Illuminations, bands, fireworks, and concerts

The secular side of the festival is equally rich. Artistic illuminations light up the streets of the center, while the town fair animates the roads throughout the opening day. The Puglian band tradition takes center stage with concerts by the municipal band and renowned guest touring bands, performing great classics of operatic and symphonic repertoire in the squares.

Completing the picture are the fireworks display that lights up the night sky and, above all, the grand finale concert in Piazza Municipio, which over the years has brought well-known names of Italian music to Villa Castelli. In recent years, the Villa Castelli City Singing Festival has also been added, a competition that gives space to local talent.

A community gathering

More than just an event, the patronal festival is a moment of collective reunion for Villa Castelli: families return to town, emigrants take the opportunity to visit, and local associations and committees work for months on the organization. It is the ideal occasion to discover an authentic corner of inland Puglia, far from the most beaten tourist paths, and to experience the warmth of a still-vibrant popular tradition.
