Montemesola's White Night: a blend of flavors, music, and old-world charm

The Marchese's White Night is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Montemesola, a village of just a few thousand inhabitants nestled in the hinterland of the province of Taranto, in Apulia. For one night, the historic center dresses in white and transforms into a vast, sprawling stage where gastronomy, music, dance, and historical memory intertwine until late at night across squares, alleys, and courtyards.
The event has its roots in popular theater. It all began with the comedy Ius Primae Noctis, written and directed by Salvatore Carrozzo and staged in the summer of 2023, inspired by the legend of the Marchese Saraceno, the feudal lord who, according to local tradition, demanded the ancient and controversial right to spend the first night with every new bride. The success of that show sparked the idea for a full-fledged village festival, organized by the Il Carrozzone Cultural and Theater Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Montemesola. The first edition took place in the summer of 2024, followed by the second in August 2025.
The hallmark of the evening is the return to the past: dancers in 19th-century costumes, arriving from all over Italy, bring the historic center to life with elegant court dances curated by dance societies from Apulia and Calabria. Around them, performances, exhibitions, and live music spread across the various squares: folk, pizzica, tribute bands, pop, and DJ sets sweep the audience into a festive atmosphere that engages both young and old.
The beating heart of the White Night is the large food and wine area, with dozens of stands offering the best of Apulian and Calabrian cuisine: fresh mozzarella prepared on the spot, grilled meat, octopus sandwiches, fried fish, warm pettole, handmade orecchiette, crepes, artisanal cookies, cocktails, and craft beers. Bars, pizzerias, pastry shops, and local boutiques remain open until late at night, helping to make the evening a true community celebration.
The Marchese's White Night is much more than a food festival: it is a way to rediscover the historic center of Montemesola, promote popular traditions, and tell the story of a small town in the Taranto area through food, music, and memory. Admission is completely free, and the organizers provide ample parking in the industrial area connected to the center by a free shuttle service.
