The celebration of the bonfire, zeppole pastries, and the procession in the Monticchio district of Manfredonia
In the town of Manfredonia, in the province of Foggia, the Monticchio district dedicates a heartfelt festival every year to Saint Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The event is organized by the San Giuseppe Parish, located on Via dei Veneziani on the city's northern outskirts, overlooking Monte Sant'Angelo. The parish community, established in the early 1970s, has made the March 19th solemnity its signature event, bringing together faith, music, and the folk traditions of Puglia.
The most anticipated moment for the locals is the great Saint Joseph's bonfire, lit on the eve of the feast: a propitiatory fire rooted in ancient agricultural traditions marking the arrival of spring. Around the flames, the Sagra della Zeppola takes place, celebrating the fried pastry that is the symbol of Father's Day and this specific occasion, distributed and enjoyed by all participants. The evening's entertainment is provided by scouts, majorettes, and the band from the "San Giovanni Bosco-Giordani" school, in a joyful atmosphere that involves both young and old.
The spiritual journey toward the feast begins with the novena, celebrated each evening with the rosary, vespers, and Holy Mass. This is followed by the solemn triduum, featuring guest priests from across the Gargano and Foggia areas. On March 19th, the day of the solemnity, the morning Holy Mass, second vespers, and—most importantly—the procession of the Saint Joseph statue take place through the streets of the district, accompanied by the Città di Manfredonia musical band and concluding with a blessing and the entrustment of fathers to the Saint.
Devotion to Saint Joseph remains deeply rooted in many towns across Puglia, where festive tables and small altars dedicated to the Saint are set up. In Manfredonia, this devotion translates into a neighborhood festival that combines liturgical moments with recreational activities: foosball tournaments, the San Giuseppe Soccer Cup, and evenings of musical meditation. It is an occasion where the Monticchio district rediscovers its identity and renews, from generation to generation, a profound bond with its community.
The festival falls in the heart of March, as Puglia prepares for spring. Here, the veneration of Saint Joseph intertwines with ancestral farming traditions, propitiatory bonfires, and traditional sweets, offering a glimpse of a vibrant and participatory folk culture. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover Manfredonia, a city overlooking the gulf of the same name and a gateway to the Gargano, during an intimate and authentic time of year.
The festival was preceded by the novena, celebrated from March 10th to 18th at 5:30 PM with the rosary, vespers, and Holy Mass. The solemn triduum (March 16-18) was animated by guest priests: Father Fabio Clemente (Rodi Garganico), Father Stefano Mazzone (San Giovanni Rotondo), and Monsignor Franco Moscone, Archbishop.
Among the additional initiatives: the foosball tournament (March 15, 4:30 PM, parish hall), "Meditations in Music" with Maestro Emanuel Gatta (March 17, 7:30 PM), and the San Giuseppe Soccer Cup at the "Eden" field (March 18, 3:30 PM).
On March 18th, at 7:30 PM, the traditional bonfire was lit alongside the Sagra della Zeppola, featuring scouts, majorettes, and the band from the "San Giovanni Bosco-Giordani" school. On March 19th, the day of the solemnity, the 9:30 AM Holy Mass, second vespers at 5:30 PM, and at 6:00 PM the procession of the statue through the parish streets took place, with a concelebration presided over by Monsignor Umberto Domenico D'Ambrosio, Archbishop Emeritus, and the parade of the Città di Manfredonia band.
Manfredonia can be reached by car via the SS89 and SS693 roads from the Foggia motorway exit (A14). By train, the reference station is Foggia, which is connected to Manfredonia by bus. The San Giuseppe Parish is located on Via dei Veneziani, in the Monticchio district, on the northern outskirts of the city.
The festival, which is both religious and popular in nature, is free to attend. For updated dates and programs, we recommend checking the official channels of the San Giuseppe Parish of Manfredonia.
