Faith, tradition, and the flavors of Salento in Cutrofiano on March 19th

In the heart of Salento, the small town of Cutrofiano, in the province of Lecce, experiences one of the most intense moments of its devotional calendar with the Feast of Saint Joseph, traditionally celebrated around March 19th—the day the Church dedicates to the Patriarch, which in Italy also coincides with Father's Day. It is an occasion that unites religious observance with popular tradition, drawing locals, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns.
The highlight is the solemn procession departing from the church dedicated to Saint Joseph the Patriarch. The evocative papier-mâché statue of the saint holding the Baby Jesus, adorned with flowers and cheered by the faithful, is carried through the streets of the historic center. Papier-mâché is one of Salento's most renowned traditional crafts, and the statue is a symbol of the community's identity. The procession, accompanied by brass bands, culminates in a deeply felt gesture: the blessing of new fathers—men who have become fathers within the past year.
Devotion intertwines with the Zeppola Festival, linked to the Salento custom of enjoying this typical pastry during the days of the feast of the prince of saints. The zeppole di San Giuseppe—doughnuts made with flour, eggs, lemon zest, and lard, either fried or baked and filled with custard, black cherries, or chocolate—are distributed at stalls set up throughout the town. Alongside them, other traditional dishes are served, primarily ciceri e tria, the classic homemade pasta with chickpeas that symbolizes Salento's peasant cuisine.
After the religious rites, the secular festivities come to life: fireworks announce the opening of the food stalls, while concerts and musical performances animate the squares until late. The illuminations, pyrotechnic displays, and the scent of freshly fried zeppole create a festive atmosphere that engages both young and old, in one of the most authentic festivals of the Salento spring.
The Feast of Saint Joseph and Zeppola Festival is much more than a gastronomic event: it is a collective ritual that strengthens the bonds of the Cutrofiano community and preserves its roots. Those visiting Salento during this period will find an authentic opportunity to discover the truest side of Puglia, defined by popular traditions, devotion, and genuine flavors.
