The patron saint's feast in the heart of Grecìa Salentina
In the heart of Grecìa Salentina, the area in the province of Lecce where the ancient Griko language still survives, the town of Corigliano d'Otranto celebrates its patron saint every year with the Saint Nicholas Festival. Devotion to Saint Nicholas of Myra, the wonder-working bishop venerated by both the Eastern and Western Churches, has accompanied the Corigliano community since 1727, when the Saint was proclaimed protector of the town. The festival is traditionally held in the last ten days of August, when the streets of the historic center light up with music and lights.
The festival intertwines religious and civic dimensions according to a ritual renewed for generations. The most heartfelt moment is the procession: the statue of the Saint is carried on the shoulders of the faithful and the bearers to the gates of the town, where, by ancient custom, the keys to the city are symbolically handed over to the patron. Eucharistic celebrations in the mother church, animated by the parish choir, mark the days along with the solemn outings of the simulacrum among the crowd.
On the civic side, the festival offers the typical spectacle of Salento patronal feasts. The main streets of the village are adorned with splendid illuminations, while in the central square, the cassa armonica—the traditional wooden stage—hosts grand brass band concerts and classical orchestral performances, the true stars of the evenings. Market stalls selling sweets, toys, and local products enliven the center, and each evening concludes with highly anticipated firework displays, with pyrotechnic shows lighting up the Salento sky.
The Saint Nicholas Festival is also the perfect opportunity to visit Corigliano d'Otranto, a village known for its majestic Castello De' Monti and the intimate atmosphere of the Grecìa Salentina towns. A few kilometers from Otranto and the Adriatic coast, the town welcomes residents, returning emigrants, and tourists during these days, in a celebration that unites spirituality, community identity, and the popular joy typical of the Apulian summer. Admission to all events is free.
The 2026 Saint Nicholas Festival will be held, according to the traditional calendar, on August 22nd and 23rd in the historic center of Corigliano d'Otranto. The detailed program, including the times of the celebrations, the names of the brass bands, and the companies in charge of the firework displays, is usually published by the festival committee in the weeks preceding the event.
The usual structure includes the procession of the Saint's statue with the symbolic handover of the city keys, holy masses in the mother church, grand brass band concerts on the bandstand, and evening firework displays. The village streets will be lit by traditional illuminations and animated by market stalls.
