The summer festival of the co-patron saint of Melpignano, in the heart of Grecìa Salentina
In the small village of Melpignano, in the province of Lecce and the heart of the Grecìa Salentina, the Saint Mary Magdalene Festival is the most anticipated religious and civil event of the summer. Every year, around July 22nd — the date of the Saint's liturgical feast — the entire community gathers around its co-patron in a celebration that weaves together faith, historical memory, and the folk traditions of Salento.
The cult of Saint Mary Magdalene in Melpignano dates back to the second half of the 16th century, when the Chapel dedicated to her was built in the shadow of the ancient Augustinian convent. The devotion was solidified in 1661, when the chapel was rebuilt by the Municipality as a sign of gratitude: during the terrible plague of 1656 that devastated the Kingdom of Naples, the Province of Terra d'Otranto was miraculously spared, and the inhabitants attributed this protection to the intercession of the Saint, who has since been venerated as co-patron alongside Saint George the Martyr.
The heart of the festival is the solemn evening procession on July 21st: around 8:00 PM, the parade leaves the Saint's Chapel, carrying the statue of Saint Mary Magdalene along with the majestic statue of Saint George the Martyr, the town's main protector. The procession winds through the streets of the historic center, decorated for the occasion, accompanied by a brass band and followed by a crowd of faithful. On July 22nd, the main day, and July 23rd, Eucharistic celebrations in the Church of Saint George mark the sacred dimension of the festival.
As per the tradition of Puglian patronal festivals, devotion is accompanied by secular celebrations. Piazza San Giorgio and the main streets light up with striking artisanal luminarie (light displays), authentic cathedrals of light typical of Salento, while brass band concerts and live music shows enliven the evenings until late at night. The firework displays that light up the sky over Melpignano and the traditional Watermelon Festival are unmissable, where the festival committee offers delicious watermelons to residents and visitors in an atmosphere of joy and sharing.
Located a few kilometers from Lecce, Melpignano is one of the municipalities of Grecìa Salentina, the cultural and linguistic area of Salento where Griko, an ancient language of Greek origin, has been preserved. The town is world-famous for hosting, every summer, the grand finale of La Notte della Taranta, the largest event dedicated to the pizzica and Salento folk music. The Saint Mary Magdalene Festival offers a chance to discover the most authentic and devotional soul of this Puglian village, among churches, courtyards, and palaces made of Lecce stone.

The detailed program of the secular and religious festivities has not yet been published; it will be released in the weeks leading up to the event by the Melpignano Patronal Festival Committee.
