Fresh Salento watermelon on the eve of Saint Mary Magdalene in Melpignano
The Watermelon Festival is one of the most genuine summer events in Melpignano, a small village in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of the Grecìa Salentina in Puglia. Every year, on the evening of July 21st, the historic town squares come alive with people, music, and the scent of fresh fruit: the festival committee distributes free slices of watermelon to residents and visitors alike, turning a simple gesture into a moment of shared celebration. It is a small but highly attended festival that brings joy and lightheartedness to the hottest evenings of the Salento summer.
The Watermelon Festival is not an isolated event: it is celebrated on the eve of the feast of Saint Mary Magdalene, co-patron saint of Melpignano alongside Saint George the Martyr. Devotion to Magdalene dates back to the 16th century and was strengthened in 1661, when the town believed it was miraculously spared from the plague that had struck the Kingdom of Naples in 1656. Since then, the community has honored the Saint with three days of religious and civil celebrations, of which the festival represents the most popular and convivial moment.
The day of July 21st blends religious tradition with local cheer:
The celebrations continue in the following days with more band concerts, illuminations, and fireworks in Piazza San Giorgio.
Known worldwide as the home of the final concert of the Notte della Taranta, the Municipality of Melpignano also preserves more intimate, local traditions like this one. The village, with its beautiful arcaded square and the monumental complex of the Augustinian Convent, offers visitors an authentic image of the deep Salento, defined by popular faith, hospitality, and genuine flavors.
Those spending their holidays in Salento will find the Melpignano Watermelon Festival the perfect opportunity to experience a true, free, family-friendly village festival, far from the major tourist events. Between the music of the bands, the solemnity of the procession, and the freshness of the watermelon, it is a simple and sincere way to connect with the soul of the Grecìa Salentina.
The 2026 Watermelon Festival will be held in Melpignano on July 21st, as part of the celebrations in honor of Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint George the Martyr. The date is confirmed by the Salento events calendar; the detailed schedule, including guest bands and evening events, will be released by the festival committee close to the event. As every year, the procession, brass band concerts, pyromusical show, and free watermelon distribution in Piazza San Giorgio are expected.
