The August patronal feast in the heart of Grecìa Salentina
In the heart of the Salento summer, the small village of Castrignano de' Greci, in the province of Lecce, celebrates its patron saint with the Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua. It is the most cherished event of the year for this community in Grecìa Salentina, a linguistic island where Grico, an ancient dialect of Byzantine origin, is still preserved today. For a few days at the end of August, the town center fills with lights, music, and devotion, drawing back residents and emigrants who return home specifically for the feast.
The devotion of the people of Castrignano to Saint Anthony is rooted in an episode passed down through generations. In 1898, a violent whirlwind threatened to destroy the town: the inhabitants carried the statue of the saint in procession and, according to tradition, the storm suddenly dissolved, sparing the houses and fields. Since then, Saint Anthony has been considered the protector of the community, and the August feast renews this gratitude every year.
The central moment is the solemn procession that winds through the historic center with the statue of the saint, often accompanied by that of the Madonna Arcona, deeply beloved by the locals. The main street is framed by traditional illuminations, and the brass band marks the rhythm of the parade. Among the most evocative rituals is the symbolic handing over of the town keys from the mayor to the parish priest, a gesture that ideally entrusts the community to the saint's protection.
Alongside the religious moments, the feast comes alive with secular events: brass band concerts in the squares, traditional Salento folk music, and evening performances entertain the crowds, while food stalls offer local flavors. The grand finale is the fireworks display, which lights up the sky over the Grico village, bidding farewell to the patron saint until the following year.
With just over 3,600 inhabitants, Castrignano de' Greci is one of the nine municipalities of Grecìa Salentina, a land of ancient olive trees, Byzantine crypts, and musical traditions linked to the pizzica. Experiencing the Feast of Saint Anthony means immersing yourself in an ancient identity, where the sacred and community celebration intertwine in the most authentic way in inland Salento.
The 2026 Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua returns to Castrignano de' Greci on August 23. The Grecìa Salentina village renews its devotion to its patron saint with the procession of the saint's statue through the historic center, illuminations along the main street, brass band concerts, and the traditional symbolic handing over of the town keys to the parish priest. A fireworks display is expected at the end. The full program with times will be published by the Festival Committee closer to the event.
Castrignano de' Greci is located in central Salento, about 25 km from Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS 16 and the provincial roads of Grecìa Salentina; the nearest train station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est, with connections from Lecce. The reference airports are Brindisi and Bari.
The patronal feast events take place outdoors in the historic center and are free to attend. It is advisable to arrive early for the procession and evening concerts and to park in areas outside the center. The town is crowded during the feast days: check with the Municipality or the Festival Committee for updated schedules.
